YCC Subcommittees and Committee Task Forces
NATIONAL MEETING ACTIVITIES (NMA) SUBCOMMITTEE
At National Meetings, we organize Career Forums that focus on technical and workforce issues of interest to younger chemists. Not only do we cover how to get that first job--we also help you keep it! Many of these programs are panel discussions that provide younger chemists with an opportunity to ask questions of someone who has the experience they need to set their direction. Our YCC Reception offers an opportunity for younger chemists to meet each other as well as members of ACS governance. Younger chemists can pick up career-related materials at the YCC booth and learn more about ACS career-related programs.
LOCAL AND REGIONAL ACTIVITIES (LRA) SUBCOMMITTEE
The Local and Regional Activities Subcommittee encourages participation in local ACS activities by establishing contact with and helping to develop local section YCCs (LSYCC). Resource Consultants answer questions and facilitate communication between the local section YCCs and the national YCC when needed. Through these LSYCCs, the YCC is able to reach a wider audience throughout the United States. The subcommittee also encourages interaction between the LSYCCs and their ACS local sections. We also support YCC programming that is held across the country at regional meetings.
COMMUNICATIONS (COM) SUBCOMMITTEE
The Communications Subcommittee is constantly looking for new ways to disseminate information to younger chemists. We publish two newsletters per year that are filled with articles focusing on career and professional development topics. These articles are available on the YCC web site: http://www.chemistry.org/ycc. Our web page features information on ACS and YCC programs, employment resources, articles on career and professional development issues, an electronic bulletin board, and "One-on-One," a "virtual mentoring" project designed to encourage and assist students as they pursue a career in science.
SOCIETY INTERFACE AND OUTREACH (SIO) SUBCOMMITTEE
YCC also works with other committees and groups within the ACS. These efforts are by the Society Interface and Outreach Subcommittee. We provide input to the ACS Council by commenting on petitions and giving a report during the Council meetings. We form alliances with other governance groups who cosponsor YCC programs and establish liaison relationships to encourage interaction between groups. For example, YCC members serve on the Membership Retention Task Force and the Local Section Mentoring Steering Team.
STRATEGIC PLANNING (SP) SUBCOMMITTEE
The responsibilities of the Subcommittee are: to monitor the YCC Strategic Plan and the strategic planning process, to ensure that the YCC strategic plan is consistent with the ACS Strategic plan, to make recommendations of changes or adjustments to the plan and to facilitate the strategic planning process at both the Committee and Subcommittee levels. The Subcommittee will consist of one member from each of the other Subcommittees and the YCC Chair.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP (LDW) TASK FORCE
Organizes and promotes the annual Leadership Development Workshop (LDW) that is exclusively dedicated to the younger chemists during the ACS Leaders Conference. Coordinates the selection of travel awards recipients and other participants for the LDW.
CHEMLUMINARY AWARD TASK FORCE
Collects and reviews nominations for YCC ChemLuminary Awards and selects the winning LSYCCs and ACS technical Divisions.
