Outstanding LSYCC for 2006
Northeastern

The winner of the 2006 Outstanding LSYCC went to the Northeastern LSYCC. In 2005 this LSYCC focused on improving organization of several new events introduced in the pervious years in order to lay a solid foundation for future expansion. They hosted the Northeast Student Chemistry Career Fair with the participation of the ACS Career Services, featuring resume writing and interview workshops. Another exceptional event was the 7th Annual Northeastern Student Chemistry Research Conference. The Conference was a great success in terms of attracting new students and improving organization. The most impressive event was their week-long exchange program with the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker-Jungchemikerforum (German Chemical Society – YCC) in which ten graduate and two undergraduate students from colleges and universities in the Boston area traveled to Germany to participate the 5th NESACS/GDCh exchange program. Other activities from the Northeastern LSYCC included a variety of social events for students in the Boston area. Last but not least, this LSYCC maintained a successful website which got approximately 3000 hits in 2005. Great jobs NE LSYCC! We applaud your efforts and accomplishments!

Outstanding or Creative LSYCC Event for 2006
San Diego

The award for the 2006 Most Creative LSYCC Event was presented to the San Diego LSYCC. This local section YCC was recognized for its Immigration Workshop that provided the necessary tools and accurate information from experienced immigration attorneys on how foreign-born researchers and chemists/scientists can apply for permanent residency in the United States, a step that is required before obtaining the U.S. citizenship. This workshop supported the ACS missions through meeting the needs of members as well as encouraging new memberships and opportunity to work with the other organizations. Several organizations co-sponsored this event, including the International Society for Computational Biology, Association of Woman in Science in San Diego, and Immigration Equality. The San Diego LSYCC invited three immigration attorneys to discuss a range of important topics such as the Overview of employment-based immigration petition including Extraordinary Ability, Exceptional Ability, Outstanding Professors and Researchers, and National Interest Waiver (NIW), PERM (Program Electronic Review Management) regulations for labor certification, Prevailing wage for permanent labor certification, and NIW case studies. The workshop was well attended by scientific individuals who offered very positive feedbacks. Best wishes for continuing your future endeavors, San Diego!

Outstanding New LSYCC for 2006
Midland

Midland was awarded the 2006 ChemLuminary Award for hosting six large events in 2005 that were intended to providing social and networking opportunities, organizational support for scientific meeting activities, and new member recruitment. The Midland LSYCC’s efforts aimed at further engaging newer employees of The Dow Chemical Company (DCC), Dow Corning (DC), other Midland area businesses, and their section’s student affiliates. The Midland LSYCC identified young leaders early and showed them the value of the chemical profession and the benefits of the ACS. They also helped build professional networks for younger chemists. As a result, exciting activities were generated for the YCC members such as networking activities for young chemists from DCC, DC and Central Michigan University, a river raft trip at the Chippewa River Outfitters, and two sports outing (Lansing Lugnuts Baseball Game & Saginaw Spirit Hockey Game). In addition, this LSYCC provided an informational booth and assistance to the Midland Fall Scientific Meeting. Keep up your good work and good luck, Midland!

Outstanding Programming by a Division in 2006
Division of Organic Chemistry (ORGN)

The ORGN Division received this outstanding award in 2006. The Division of Organic Chemistry annually awards fellowships to outstanding third and fourth year graduate students in organic chemistry. The program, now in its 25th year, has awarded nearly 300 fellowships since 1983. In 2005 the ORGN Division awarded 18 Graduate Fellowships and published the biographical sketches of the fellows in Organic Letters. Each of the fellowships is sponsored by a prominent company, organization or individual endowment. The fellows were selected by an independent committee, and evidence of research accomplishments is an important factor in the selection process. They were given a stipend for travel to the National Organic Symposium to present a poster on their work. Excellent job, ORGN Division! We truly appreciate the efforts from your division for the professional growth of younger chemists!
