2005 Honorees

Outstanding LSYCC for 2005
San Diego

This year San Diego received its first ChemLuminary Award for Outstanding LSYCC. In 2004, the San Diego LSYCC expanded to 12 monthly activities, including several career and professional development activities such as Career Seminar, Organic Farm Visit, Industrial Tour, and HPLC Technical Workshop. The San Diego LSYCC also participated in public outreach and community service events, including the Chem Expo during National Chemistry Week and a toy drive for St. Vincent De Paul in December. Two happy hours, a hiking trip, an annual Beach Day, an indoor sport climbing outing, and a street fair and bowling night provided social and networking opportunities for younger chemists. Two new initiatives were created: the launch of a San Diego YCC e-newsletter and the formation of Younger Chemists Interest Groups, which provided a forum for younger chemists to connect with other younger chemists with similar interests. Congratulations to the San Diego LSYCC for its extraordinary work!

Outstanding or Creative LSYCC Event for 2005
Northeastern

The award for the Most Creative LSYCC Event for 2004 was presented to the Northeastern LSYCC. This local section YCC organized a brand new event, the Northeast Student Chemistry Career Fair (NSCCF). The fair featured morning workshops on résumé writing and interviewing by ACS Career Services. In the afternoon, 120 job-seeking attendees met with representatives from 12 different regional companies to discuss employment opportunities. Several attendees received interviews or job offers as a result of the fair. Keep up your good work, and good luck, Northeastern!

Outstanding New LSYCC for 2005
Minnesota

The 2004 Outstanding New LSYCC was awarded to Minnesota. The Minnesota LSYCC began in 2004 with two events focusing on career development and two events focusing on social interaction. Their career development events included a presentation on environmental chemistry and a seminar given by the ACS Career Services. Their social events included a tour of Summit Brewery and co-sponsorship of a year-end event for the local section. Minnesota also used the “Networking Beaker” program to connect its members, and the program has already helped members to find jobs. Best wishes for continuing your future endeavors, Minnesota!
