Outstanding LSYCC for 2004
Western New York
Western New York was awarded the 2004 ChemLuminary Award for Outstanding LSYCC for consistently hosting a wide variety of programs throughout the year with a balance of academic, career development, outreach, and social events. Highlights of this past year’s events included the 21st annual Graduate Students’ Symposium at the University at Buffalo. This two-day event consisted of student talks, a poster session, keynote addresses by prominent scientists, and a discussion on the evolution of degree requirements in graduate education. This local section YCC participated in National Chemistry Week by organizing activities at many schools in the Buffalo Metro area as well as at the Buffalo Museum of Science. The Western NY YCC also has an ongoing collaboration with the Boy Scouts of America, overseeing the Chemistry Merit Badge.
Outstanding LSYCC Event for 2004
Indiana
The winner of the 2004 Outstanding LSYCC Event award went to the Indiana LSYCC for its 4th Annual Local Section Poster Session. More than 80 presenters and 150 attendees gathered at the Lilly Corporate Center for a research poster session. This year’s event, which featured increased industrial involvement, hosted 11 universities, 3 companies, a government agency, and ACS Project SEED participants. A seminar on drug discovery and development accompanied the event. This was an excellent way for the LSYCC to be involved in its local section and to encourage exchange of ideas among different groups of scientists. We applaud your efforts, Indiana LSYCC, and wish for many more successful poster sessions in Indiana!
Outstanding New LSYCC for 2004
Midland (MI)
The 2004 Best New LSYCC winner was Midland. The Midland LSYCC had a robust beginning by hosting a number of events. These events included a YCC kick-off barbeque and planetarium show at Delta College, a paintball outing with Dow’s New Hire Network, a bowling night at Central Michigan University with the ACS Student Affiliates, and a holiday social. These events were well received and have paved the way for many successful events to come. Good luck, Midland LSYCC!

The North Carolina LSYCC collected care goods over a month’s time and sent them to soldiers in Iraq. The recipients included YCC relatives as well as other local North Carolina soldiers from nearby Fort Bragg. Great idea, North Carolina LSYCC!
