2001 Honorees

Outstanding LSYCC for 2001
North Carolina and Western New York (TIE)

The race for Outstanding LSYCC was the closest ever, with a tie between North Carolina and Western New York for the award. This was the first win for North Carolina in this category, and the fourth consecutive win for Western New York as Outstanding LSYCC.

North Carolina held an impressive assortment of events during 2001 and has established itself as one of the most innovative LSYCCs in the country. Their events included a Pre-National Meeting mixer in both the spring and the fall, intended to bring together younger chemists who planned on attending the ACS National Meeting. A tour of the Chatham Hill Winery, which was started by Duke Professor Robert Henkens, showed how wine is created, from the processing of grapes to the labeling of bottles. A joint lecture with the newly formed North Carolina Senior Chemists Committee was one of the most well received events of the year. And most impressive was their participation in the North Carolina State Fair"s BioFrontiers Tent. This event, which won Outstanding LSYCC Event in 2001, reaches approximately 167,000 (22%!) of fairgoers with educational chemistry presentations.

Western New York has consistently hosted a well-balanced program of events, spanning academic, career development, outreach, and social events. Additionally, Western New York has remained strong throughout leadership changes demonstrating excellent organizational stability. To highlight a few of Western New York LSYCC events during 2001: The 19th Annual Graduate Students" Symposium, a research symposium organized and run by graduate students for graduate students was successful once again. Their National Chemistry Week outreach program presented hands-on and hands-off chemistry demonstrations to more than 2350 students at 10 schools and the Buffalo Museum of Science. An annual ACS career development workshop is held as one of the monthly local section meetings, and several social events are held including a holiday party and golf tournament.

The Northeastern LSYCC provided a weeklong program of science, education, and friendship. In exchange, the Northeastern LSYCC will send 12 students to Germany for a similar experience in 2002.
