1999 Honorees
1999 Outstanding LSYCC
(tie) St. Louis / Western New York
The St. Louis YCC hosted several events in 1999, including a career resource seminar, "Managing an Effective Job Search", and a field trip to the Anheuser Busch Brewery. They also participated in National Chemistry Week activities, Kids in Chemistry programs, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Perhaps their most memorable activity in 1999 was working a concession stand at Busch Stadium during Cardinals games, which generated funds for two $250 travel awards. The graduate student recipients used the funds to attend national ACS meetings.
The Western NY YCC helped organize the 17th annual Graduate Students' Symposium. This two-day event consisted of student talks, a poster session, a keynote address by a renowned scientist each day, a round-table discussion, a reception, and a job fair. The round-table discussion allowed students and senior scientists to discuss pertinent issues in science and career development. The Western NY YCC was instrumental in procuring funds for this round-table event thanks to a minigrant from ACS, which was specifically targeted for the retention of younger chemists in ACS. Furthermore, this LSYCC worked with their local section to celebrate National Chemistry Week by organizing activities at elementary, middle, and high schools and the Buffalo Museum of Science. The Western NY YCC also helped supervise children for the Boy Scouts of America Chemistry Merit Badge and organized social events, including a holiday party, welcome and potluck picnics, and a golf tournament.
1999 Outstanding LSYCC Event
Northeastern
The 1999 Outstanding LSYCC Event Award went to the Northeastern YCC. Their conference brought together students from more than 19 colleges and universities in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. This day was marked by a keynote address delivered by Prof. Cynthia Friend from Harvard University, 8 student research talks, and a poster and lunch session with more than 50 student presenters.
1999 Outstanding New LSYCC
North Carolina
The North Carolina YCC organized a tour of the Carolina Brewery and arranged a meeting at Sphinx Pharmaceuticals in Research Triangle Park, which included the "Interview Techniques and Career Development" presentation. These events were well received and pave the way for many successful future events.
1999 Most creative LSYCC Event
Cincinnati, OH
The winner of this distinguished prize was the Cincinnati YCC. This section recognized the importance of programming to fit into busy younger chemists' lifestyles. They started a brown-bag lunch series that was conducive to a convenient lunch place and time. Two topics of these lunch sessions included a "Résumé Writing" talk and a "Postdoctoral Experiences" panel discussion.
