1998 Honorees
1998 Outstanding LSYCC
Western New York YCC
The continued vitality of the Western New York YCC is demonstrated by the 16th annual Graduate Students' Symposium, run entirely by students at the University of NY at Buffalo. In addition to organizing this very successful event, the Western NY YCC played an active role in a National Chemistry Week program in which they did hands-on experiments with about 2200 elementary-age children in 6 different schools and the Buffalo Museum of Science. They participated in programs comprised of area teachers and scientists to improve science teaching methods. Their 1998 activities also included a Career Counseling Seminar and four social events. One key to this LSYCC's success is their close contact with their Local Section ACS. The Western New York YCC has a representative on the Western New York Local Section executive committee and members of their Younger Chemists Committee attend local section ACS meetings.
1998 Outstanding LSYCC Event
Cleveland YCC
The Cleveland YCC is the recipient of the 1998 Outstanding LSYCC Event Award for their Younger Chemists Lecture Series. Through this community outreach program, the Cleveland YCC effectively addressed the gap between high school chemistry teachers/students and professional chemists. During each visit, a Local Section YCC member offered insight into their field and engaged the students in discussion.
1998 Best New LSYCC
Oklahoma YCC
The Oklahoma YCC immediately put their YCC Starter Grant money to good use by organizing a workshop entitled Managing an Effective Job Search. They successfully tailored this program offered by the ACS Department of Career Services for their community needs. Dr. Warren V. Bush, a retired employee of Shell Development Co., offered advice about resume preparation and interview techniques to undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students.
1998 Most Creative LSYCC Event
St. Louis YCC
The St. Louis YCC receives the 1998 Most Creative LSYCC Event Award for the establishment of the St. Louis YCC Travel Awards for younger chemists to attend regional or national ACS meetings. By working a concession stand at a St. Louis Cardinals Baseball game, this YCC succeeded in raising enough money for two younger chemist grants of $250 each. Not only is it remarkable how creative this YCC has been at fund-raising, but the travel award establishes a precedent for other Local Section YCCs to follow.
