1997 Honorees

1997 Outstanding LSYCC
Dallas-Fort Worth YCC

The Dallas-Fort Worth YCC is the recipient of the 1997 Outstanding LSYCC Award. After receiving a YCC Starter Grant and the 1996 Best New LSYCC Award, the Dallas-Fort Worth YCC continues to be an active committee, organizing career development activities, participating in local section activities, and doing community outreach projects. Their 1997 activities included tours of local laboratories, formation and organization of a biweekly literature club, science fair judging, and demonstrations at a children's home. The committee encouraged younger chemists to attend local section meetings by subsidizing their meals. The LSYCC activities were supported with funds raised by selling safety glasses and model kits. Key to this LSYCC's success is the continued involvement of the members, even after the departure of the committee's founders.

1997 Outstanding LSYCC Event
St. Louis YCC

The St. Louis YCC, recipient of the 1997 Outstanding LSYCC Event Award, was extremely active in the 1997 National Chemistry Week Celebration. Working in conjunction with the St. Louis Section, the younger chemists in the section organized and promoted the week's events. The LSYCC's marketing efforts included preparing and distributing of posters, contacting area politicians and businesses about supporting the event, and escorting the section's NCW mascot "Nobel Neon" around town.

1997 Best New LSYCC
Cleveland YCC

The Cleveland YCC receives the 1997 Best New LSYCC Award. Unlike many LSYCCs, which are based at academic institutions, the Cleveland YCC was started by industrial chemists. The formation of a LSYCC was one of the approaches the Cleveland Section took to increase member retention. The committee's first event, a brewery tour, was sponsored by a YCC Starter Grant. At this well-attended event, the organizers continued to build interest by announcing upcoming programs. These activities are also being promoted on a YCC web page within the Cleveland Local Section web site (http://www.csuohio.edu/cleveland_acs/LSYCC.htm).

1997 Most Creative LSYCC Event
Dallas-Fort Worth YCC

The Dallas-Fort Worth YCC was also selected to receive the 1997 Most Creative LSYCC Event Award. The committee organized a series of laboratory tours. The facilities visited (Mary Kay, Alcon Labs, and Sandoz Agro) were quite different in nature, appealing to a wide range of participants and exposing them to the variety of industrial options available.
