1996 Honorees
1996 Outstanding LSYCC
East Tennessee
The East Tennessee YCC, recipient of the 1996 Outstanding LSYCC Award, has held several successful activities, including an interview workshop and seminars about careers in industry and academia. Through their LSYCC Web Page and list-server, they are informing members of their events and are working to reach those outside of the Knoxville area. Since the LSYCC hosted a YCC program for the Southeast Regional Meeting in 1995 (an event that attracted 100 younger chemists), they have continued to expand. A group of very active and enthusiastic officers has been a key factor in their success.
1996 Outstanding LSYCC Event
Western New York
The Western New York YCC received the 1996 Outstanding LSYCC Event Award. In the fall of 1996, this LSYCC combined forces with two graduate groups in the section and held a Chemistry Career Day. Chemists employed in several different areas (see related story) provided a wide range of perspectives. More than 150 people attended. The LSYCC worked with the Western New York section and area schools to make this event a huge success.
1996 Outstanding New LSYCC
Dallas-Fort Worth, TX
The Dallas-Fort Worth YCC , recipient of the 1996 Best New LSYCC Award, organized interdisciplinary seminars and hosted Chemistry Career Symposia, an all-day event that included workshops with a career consultant, speakers from academia and industry, and recruiters. Again, a core of dedicated officers has been instrumental in establishing this LSYCC.
1996 Most creative LSYCC Event
(tie) Cincinnati, OH / Philadelphia, PA
The Cincinnati YCC and Philadelphia YCC were both selected to receive 1996 Most Creative LSYCC Event Awards.
The Cincinnati YCC hosted a series of company tours and nontraditional work sites for chemists, including going to the morgue (where one of the participants established the connections needed to land an internship in a forensic lab) and to the reproduction division of the Cincinnati Zoo. One of their next projects is to visit a flavors company.
The Philadelphia YCC was selected to receive a Most Creative LSYCC Award for hosting a community event. LSYCC members went to Southern Home Services in Philadelphia, a temporary home for troubled adolescents and foster children; they helped the children do Kids and Chemistry experiments and then socialized with them over pizza.
