Leadership Development Award for Younger Chemists

LDW workshop

Participants at a Leadership Development Workshop

Are you taking on or pursuing a position of leadership? Would you like to develop the skills needed to be a successful leader? If so, you should apply for a YCC Leadership Development Award!

The YCC Leadership Development Workshops are held in conjunction with the ACS Annual Leaders' Conference and is part of the ACS Leadership Development system. The LDW workshops are designed to help young chemists develop into highly skilled leaders in the Society and in their chosen profession. Through the Leadership Institute younger chemists will:

  • Develop leadership skills that will be useful to members at work and in their volunteer roles
  • Identify the value and benefits of being an ACS volunteer leader to leaders and their employers
  • Acquire knowledge and share best practices through networking with other ACS leaders, governance and staff
  • Have fun through engaging and interactive sessions throughout the conference

The American Chemical Society’s Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) sponsors 15 awards providing funding for ACS members who are less than 35 years of age to travel to and participate in the annual ACS Leadership Institute. This year's institute will be held Jan. 22-24, 2010 at the Omni Ft. Worth Hotel in Ft. Worth, TX. The YCC Leadership Development award covers registration fee, transportation, lodging and meals. Fifteen award winners will be selected and an additional 15 Young Leader Award alternates will be invited to attend the ACS Leadership Institute provided they, or their employer, cover all costs.

Last year twenty-three young chemists converged in Fort Worth, Texas to attend the YCC track of the American Chemical Society's Leadership Institute. During the three day weekend, the younger chemist leaders met and networked with other ACS leaders, governance, and staff; developed leadership and management skills; indentified the value and benefits of being an ACS volunteer leader; acquired knowledge and shared best practices through networking; AND, had FUN!

"The entire weekend was well done- I honestly could not have asked for more. All of the workshops were really useful and chock full of "real-life" applicable content. Furthermore, all of the trainers as well as attendees I met were just really high quality individuals. I felt very lucky to have had such a fabulous and unique networking opportunity." - Molly 2008 LDW Attendee
