CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP FOR ENTERING FRESHMAN

Wyoming Section, American Chemical Society Scholarship

(Revised December 2, 1997)

1. Purpose

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist a qualified high school graduate in beginning his/her study of chemistry at the University of Wyoming.

2. Nature

The scholarship will consist of an award up to the equivalent of full resident tuition for the freshman year. In the event a student already has a tuition scholarship to the University, a cash award may be made, the exact amount to be fixed by the awards committee, after consideration of the student's financial need.

3. Eligibility

Application for the scholarship is limited to high school seniors whose educational aims are to pursue a bachelor's degree program in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or in Chemical Engineering at the University of Wyoming. Students need not be Wyoming residents. The award for the spring semester is contingent upon satisfactory grades for the fall semester and continuation as a Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering major at the University of Wyoming.

4. Application

The interested Senior should make written application to the Chairman of the Awards Committee for the Wyoming Section, A.C.S. (Supply appropriate address)

In addition to the following supporting information should be provided:

a. Letters of recommendation from the student's instructors in chemistry, mathematics and English.

b. A transcript of the high school record, including grades for the fall semester of the senior year and a listing of courses to be completed in the spring of the senior year.

c. Any other pertinent information, such as results of CEEB, SAT, ACT, National Merit examinations, etc.

All information should be received by the Chairman of the Awards Committee by April 1.

5. Selection

The Awards Committee will consider all applications and make recommendations for the recipient and alternates to the Executive Committee of the Wyoming Section A.C.S. After receiving authorization from the Executive Committee (normally about May 10) the Chairman of the Awards Committee will notify the U.W. Scholarship office of our selections and will cooperate with the Scholarship office for the final authorization of the award. If no worthy applicant is available or if insufficient funds are available, the committee may recommend that no award be given that year. 

6. Announcement

The name of the actual recipient of the award will be announced at the first Fall meeting of the section and the recipient will be invited to attend that meeting to be introduced to the section.

The E.R. Schierz Scholarship in Chemical Sciences

A Wyoming Section, American Chemical Society Scholarship

 (Revised April 7. 1975, December 1978, November 1982, and March 14, 1991)

1.    Purpose

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist a qualified student majoring in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Chemical Engineering who has completed at least one year of the appropriate prescribed program at the University of Wyoming.

2.    Nature

The scholarship will consist of an award up to the equivalent of full resident tuition for the following academic year. In the event a student already has a tuition scholarship to the University, a cash award may be made, the exact amount to be fixed by the Awards Committee, after consideration of the student's financial needs. This award shall be designated as the "E.R. Schierz Chemistry Scholarship Award".

3.    Eligibility

Nominations for the award are to come from the three departments involved. Interested students may ask their advisors to have the departments consider them for nomination. The scholarship is limited to current U.W. students whose educational aims are to pursue a bachelor's degree program in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Chemical Engineering at the University of Wyoming. Students need not be Wyoming residents. The award for the spring semester is contingent upon satisfactory grades for the fall semester and continuation as a Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering major at the University of Wyoming.

4.       Application/Nomination

The nomination by a department should include all pertinent information and  should include:

(a) Letters of recommendation from the student's instructors in chemistry or chemistry related courses and from the student's major advisor.

(b)  A transcript of the U.W. record (and of other colleges attended), including grades for the Fall semester of the current year and a record of courses in progress.

(c) Statements regarding the student's professional plans and his/her "aptitude for Chemistry".

(d) A letter from the student may be included if a department deems thus advisable,

5. Deadline

All application materials should be received by the Chairman of the Awards Committee by April 1.

6. Selection

The Awards Committee will consider all nominations and make a recommendation for the recipient to the Executive Committee of the Wyoming Section,  ACS by April 15. The recommended recipient may be a current Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior. If no worthy applicant is available or if insufficient funds are available, the committee may recommend that no award be given that year.

After receiving authorization from the Executive Committee the Chairman of the Awards Committee will cooperate with the U.W. Scholarship office to see that the Scholarship is given to the recipient.

7. Presentation

The formal presentation of the award will be made at the May meeting of the Wyoming Section, ACS. The scholarship will be awarded by the U.W. Scholarship office during the registration periods for the fall and spring semesters.

Chemistry Award for Outstanding Graduating Senior

with major in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering

A Wyoming Section, American Chemical Society Scholarship

(As Amended November 27, 1973, April 24, 1975, and November 1982)

The Awards Committee shall solicit nominations from the three departments involved. The Awards Committee shall select its nominee for the Student Award of the Wyoming Section of the American Chemical Society from the qualified undergraduate students. Final selection of the nominee shall be based on scholastic achievement, aptitude for chemistry, personality, and professional plans of the student. 

A. Qualifications of the Student:  The student must qualify for associate membership in the American Chemical Society.

B.   Scholastic Achievement of the Student

1.   The grade point average in chemistry* courses shall be determined by existing University practice, i.e., the grade in each course shall be weighed in accordance with the credit hours allotted to that course. *A chemistry course is defined as any course offered by the Department of Chemistry or any course not offered by the department if the word "chemistry" appears in the title, e.g., Biological Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

2.   The overall grade point average of the student shall be computed in like manner and it, also, shall be taken into consideration in determining the overall scholastic rating.

3. Grades earned elsewhere by transfer students shall be included in the calculation of their grade point average.

4    The total number of credit hours in chemistry courses shall also be considered as a factor in the selection.

C. Chemistry Aptitude Rating of Student

In assessing the student's "aptitude for chemistry" criteria such as enthusiasm, originality, and laboratory skills shall be considered. The departmental nomination should include statements from the student's instructors and employers to permit the Awards Committee to arrive at a fair evaluation of this factor.

D. Personality Rating of the Student

The personality of the student shall be assessed by one or more of the following means. consultation with persons who know the student well, extracurricular activities of the student, personal contact with the student by members of the Awards Committee

E. Professional Plans of the Student

The departmental nomination shall indicate the future plans of the student with respect to the chemical or allied professions and the Awards Committee shall consider this factor in the overall rating.

F.    Nature and Presentation of the Award

       1.   The student's name will be inscribed on the Wyoming Section ACS award plaque. The award shall consist of a certificate, a one year subscription to a journal published by the American Chemical Society, that is appropriate to the student's interest (e.g., for Biochemistry majors: subscription to Biochemistry; for Chemical Engineering majors: subscription to one of the I & EC journals), and associate membership in the American Chemical Society for one year 

       2.   The Awards Committee shall present the name of its nominee to the Executive Committee for its approval at its April meeting. Presentation of the award shall be made at the May meeting.

       3.   In the event that there is no qualified student of sufficient distinction to merit the award, the Awards Committee shall recommend that no award be made for that year.

Sara Jane Rhoads

Graduate Student Research Award

1. Award

The purpose of the award is to honor one or more graduate students in Chemistry. To be eligible for the award, students should either expect to receive their Ph.D. degree within a year of the award date or have recently received their Ph.D. (but no earlier than the previous December), Students may be nominated more than one time but cannot receive the award more than once.

The award will be presented at the Wyoming Section, ACS annual banquet and will consist of a monetary award and a certificate. In addition, the recipients name will be engraved on a plaque for display in the Chemistry Department.

The award is not to be associated with or a substitute for any teaching or research fellowship assigned to the recipient and the award is not contingent on the recipient having or not having any fellowship. 

2. Nomination

The student is to be nominated by his/her major professor. The nomination is to include

(a) letters of recommendation from the student's major professor and from each of the student's advisory committee members.

(b) transcripts listing all courses taken. 

(c) a current vita.

(d) a list of publications from the graduate research work.

(e) an up to ten page written report describing the nominee's research project and accomplishments. This is to be written by the nominee.

3. Deadline

The application materials should be received by the chairman of the Awards Committee of the Wyoming Section, ACS, by April 1.

4. Selection

Recipients of the award(s) shall be selected by a committee consisting of the members of the Awards Committee of the Wyoming Section, ACS, and the chairman of the Chemistry Department (or his/her representative).

The award(s) is/are funded by the annual income from the Sara Jane Rhoads Graduate Student Research Award Trust Fund in the University of Wyoming Foundation. At the meeting of the committee to evaluate the nominees, the committee will assign the use of the available income. All or part of the income may be awarded to one recipient or may be divided among the recipients. If there is no eligible award nominee for a given year or if all of the available funds are not used for awards, the income may accumulate to be used for awards in subsequent years or for augmenting the corpus of the fund.

The name(s) of the recipient(s) and the award amount(s) will be reported to the Executive Committee of the Wyoming Section, ACS, so that arrangements may be made for the engraving of the plaque, for the preparation of the certificate, and for the presentation of the award at the annual banquet.
