Greetings fellow ACS Members !
We have a great dinner meeting planned for February 25th, as we welcome Dr. Lon J. Mathias from the University of Southern Mississippi. In addition to his polymer research, Lon is well known for his innovative work in polymer education, especially with the creation of multimedia material and the Macrogalleria, a polymer learning site that provides information from elementary through the graduate level. This fun and education site is worth checking out: http:// www.psrc.usm.edu/macrog. His topic on "Blended Learning" promises to have something for everyone. I look forward to seeing you there!
As always, if you have an idea or suggestion for a great dinner meeting, or if you'd like to volunteer as a speaker, please contact me. Interdisciplinary topics that would appeal to a general audience tend to be wonderfully popular, and our fall schedule is wide open.
We're always looking for items to make our Double Bond stronger. If you'd like to contribute news items, announcements, ideas, blurbs, or other items that might be of interest to members, please send submissions to Patty Shelley, at shelleyp@canisius.edu. Do you have a non-traditional career in chemistry that you'd like to share with our members? Send it to Patty and we'll include it in an upcoming issue of the Double Bond. Deadline for submissions is the first of each month.
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Patricia DePra,Chair

Title of Talk:
"Blended Learning in
Polymers: Keeping the Baby, Adding New Bathwater"
Abstract of Talk:
From our own experience,
amplified by others, it is clear that the best learning environment involves an
approach that combines the best of the traditional and the most effective of the
new. Books and in-class lectures offer many students the most productive option
for learning, while others learn best by exploratory approaches made possible
via multimedia material delivered over the net or on CD. The best overall
approach involves a broad combination of available resources and methods of
presentation so that students can use those most suited to their specific needs
and learning styles: "seeing" a reaction mechanism in 3D animation is
best for understanding its steric and stereochemical aspects while in-class
discussions of how reaction variables affect kinetics and product composition
provides the anecdoctal reinforcement to make application of the reaction more
efficient. This talk will describe efforts underway at USM, in collaboration
with educators around the world, to implement this "blended" approach
to polymer education: new textbooks, lab manuals, problem sets, multimedia
resources, and on-line testing and assessment materials will be described.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Lon J. Mathias is a Professor in the Department of Polymer Science at the University of Southern Mississippi, and the Director of the NSF Polymer Science Learning Center. He is also PI, responsible for oversight of NMR facilities within Polymer Science, and for several research and education grants and projects. Lon has been with the University of Southern Mississippi since 1981, and has directed three MS theses, seven Honor's BS theses, and 30 Ph.D. dissertations. He received his B.S. at the University of Iowa and his M.S. & Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. His professional affiliations include the American Chemical Society and its Divisions of Polymer Chemistry; Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering; Chemical Education; and Organic Chemistry. His membership on editorial boards have included the following journals: Journal of Polymer Science, Chemistry; Polymer Composites; Designed Monomers and Polymers; Editor-in-chief, Macromolecular Syntheses. He is a past recipient of the USM Applied Research Award, the USM Basic Research Award, and a past Chair of the ACS Mississippi Section. From a professional point of
view, the benefits of an ACS membership are obvious: career services, education,
and networking opportunities are abundant. But, did you know that the ACS offers
benefits to help you with your personal life?
Through the purchasing power
of ACS members, the Board of Trustees, Group Insurance Plans for ACS Members
also endorses a broad spectrum of insurance and retirement plans for its members
through the ACS Member Insurance Program. Spouses, children, parents, and even in-laws are eligible to
participate in many of the benefits. The
key to a secure future is a sound financial plan and that includes building a
strong foundation with insurance products and retirement plans.
Whether you are single or married, the ACS Member Insurance Program has a
plan for you -- term life, hospital indemnity, AD&D, disability income,
short-term, and catastrophic medical insurance
coverages, and supplemental retirement plans.
And plans like professional liability and long term care
are just as important.
CAS And ACS Publications Divisions Will
Make Early Twentieth Century Research Available Online
Chemical Abstracts records from the early twentieth century will be linked to the ACS Journals Archive, permitting researchers to identify articles of interest in ACS journals back to the first issue of CA in 1907, then link to the full-text articles from ACS. The combined power of these two massive resources will boost their value for researchers, who have eagerly sought the enhancement.
In effect, two complementary ACS projects have been brought together to provide scientists the benefit of advanced information retrieval with the availability of a vast electronic collection of original journal literature. For more information, call 614-447-3731 or send email to help@cas.org.
Travel Awards for Chemists with
Disabilities Announced!
The ACS Committee on Chemists with Disabilities announces a new travel grant program. The program is open for all individuals with disabilities that are graduate, undergraduate students, or postdoctoral researchers who wish to make presentations at scientific meetings. The intent of the grant is to help defray some of the costs associated with travel and lodging. The goal of the program is to promote presentation of scientific research by individuals with disabilities and provide motivated students with opportunities to build professional relationships through networking.

The ACS Committee on Chemists with Disabilities announces the latest edition of Teaching Chemistry to Students with Disabilities - a resource book for teachers at the high school, college, and postgraduate level; students with disabilities, parents, and counselors.
