Dr. Angela W. Peters
This Month's Speaker
Dr. Angela W. Peters
Claflin University
Dr. Angela W. Peters is Professor and chairperson of the Chemistry Department at Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC. Dr. Peters received both the Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Chemistry from Hampton University, Hampton, Virginia and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Biochemistry from the University of South Carolina- Columbia. She received a certificate of completion from Harvard Universities Management Development Program. She was also a Research Chemist, for five years, at Sun Oil Company in the Research & Development Section, Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania.
Currently, her research focus includes the structural and functional analysis of an enzyme involved in DNA replication and subsequent cancer formation. She is a research mentor in the graduate school and her undergraduate research students have presented at national meetings such as the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minorities. Dr. Peters has garnered more than $15.0 million dollars in external funding while at Claflin University.
Dr. Peters most notable and recent awards, among much recognition, is the SC Governors Professor of the Year, 2005; National Millennium Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2004 and the 2004 James E. Hunter Award in Teaching Excellence at Claflin University. She has published in numerous scientific journals and magazines with the two most recent publications focusing on "Collaborative Learning in Biochemistry" and "Supplemental Instruction in Mathematics". She has presented laboratory papers at over 80 research conferences, and participated in a host of professional development workshops. She has conducted education workshops and seminars for universities, K-12 school systems and government labs. Peters is a featured columnist for The Times & Democrat where she writes articles on education and science/math awareness.
Dr. Peters is chair of the chemistry department which has recently received approval by the American Chemical Society (ACS) for the chemistry major. She is a member of the SC Education Foundation Taskforce, Commission on Higher Education. The committee published a report for the state entitled "Miles To Go South Carolina". This is a detailed analysis of the K-16 educational system in South Carolina. She is also a member of the American Chemical Society's Undergraduate Programming Taskforce Committee where she chaired the 2006 national ACS undergraduate conference in Atlanta, GA. Over 8,000 students, educators and scientists were in attendance. She is also an alternate councilor for the SC section of ACS. Dr. Peters is the advisor for the Student Affiliate Chapter of the ACS. The chapter at Claflin University has received an "Outstanding Chapter Award" for 2003 and 2005. This national award was provided to student chapters who excelled in outreach efforts, recruitment and science awareness, fundraising and public service. Faculty and students received the award at the 2004 national ACS meeting in Anaheim, CA, and the 2006 meeting in Atlanta, GA.
Peters and her husband, Stephen Peters, are the CEO's of the Peters Group and Peters Group Foundation. They are the founders of the Ladies and Gentlemens Clubs, featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, www.stephenpetersgroup.com. They currently have over 30 clubs in the United States from Florida to Los Angeles (approximately 2000 boys and girls). Locally, through the GEMSS program (Girls Emulating Maturity Strength and Scholarship) she has an academic year and summer program for 75 elementary and middle school girls in South Carolina (funded by The Sunshine Ladies Foundation). For the past 3 years, Peters directed AstroCHEM (funded by NASA) for over 200 middle and high school boys and girls.
