Categories of Membership

ACS member: People who meet the ACS bylaw requirements for formal training and experience in a chemical science or in a science closely related to chemistry may be approved for full ACS membership. Applications are reviewed by the Admissions Committee of the ACS.

Most chemical technicians qualify for full membership even if they do not have a bachelor’s degree, under bylaw Sec 3 (a) (5) which states as a qualification for membership "Less formal training than indicated above or a degree in a field other than a chemical science but having significant achievement in a chemical science, provided that the application is supported by documentary evidence". .

Full ACS members pay $127 per year dues to the ACS. All services of the ACS are available to members (Career Services, Society Employment Clearinghouse, reduced journal prices, etc.) and members have full voting rights. Members also receive C&E News. Click here for ACS member information.

ACS Society Affiliate:  Society Affiliate designation is given to people who apply for ACS membership, but do not have the qualifications for full membership as determined by the Admissions Committee. Many technicians who apply without giving enough information to the committee are made Society Affiliates.  If you were given Society Affiliate status and did not fill out this form, you should re-apply with the additional information and have your application reconsidered. Society Affiliates are not eligible to use some ACS services. Society Affiliates pay three-quarters dues to the ACS and receive C&E News.  Click here for ACS member information.

TECH Division Member:  ACS members who join the Division of Chemical Technicians receive the newsletter, ConnecTECH, may vote for all division officers and Councilors, may vote on division bylaws, and may hold elected or appointed division offices except for Councilor who must be an ACS member.  Division members pay $10.00 dues to the division in addition to ACS dues.

TECH Division Affiliate: Others (who are not ACS members) who join the Division of Chemical Technicians. Many Technician Affiliate Group (TAG) members are Division Affiliates, and Society Affiliates who join TECH are also Division Affiliates. But it is not necessary to be either a TAG member or a Society Affiliate to join the division as an affiliate. Division Affiliates receive the newsletter of the division and vote for division officers, but not for Councilors or on bylaws. They may be committee chairs or committee members, but cannot hold elective offices or serve on the Executive Committee. Division Affiliates pay $12.00 dues to the division (in addition to local TAG dues or Society Affiliate dues, if applicable). Division affiliates are not eligible to use most ACS services.

Local Section Affiliate: Those who are members of a local Technician Affiliate Group (TAG), but are not full ACS members are Local Section Affiliates. Local Section Affiliates must pay a minimum of $2 dues per year to their local section and may not hold elected local section offices or vote for local section bylaws or officers, according to ACS bylaws. Since those are the only requirements stated in the bylaws, the benefits/dues of local section affiliation will vary from section to section. Often affiliates will receive the newsletter and are eligible to participate in local section activities. A local section may also offer organization and/or financial support to a local TAG.
