Special Announcement : Deborah Kilmartin The Philadelphia Section, American Chemical Society and the WCC
are very sorry to learn that our friend and long-time member Deb Kilmartin passed away earlier this week. Even though Deb had been battling cancer for many years, she was a very visible and active member of the Philadelphia scientific community. Deb seemed unstoppable.

| Welcome to the Philadelphia Section ACS Website! | |
|
One of my goals this year as Section Chair is to increase the timeliness of getting information to Section members. Thus, I would like these web pages to become one of the first places that you check for information about your Section. I promise to make sure that they are routinely updated and contain the information that you want. If you have any suggestions or comments, please send them to me at philaacschair@aol.com or to the Webmaster. |
Another goal is to get more members involved in the Section. We have monthly meetings (except for July and August) with interesting lectures or chemical demonstrations and lots of opportunities for networking. We support the Chemical Consultants Network and have an active Women Chemists Committee (WCC) chaired by Kathy Thrush Shaginaw. We have a Younger Chemists Committee (YCC), chaired by Stacey Gibbs, that is planning exciting events this year and if a senior Chemist steps forward, we’d like to have an active Senior Chemist Committee as well. |

We also have public outreach programs and activities. We give various Section Awards, celebrate National Chemistry Week, help sponsor the “Expand Your Horizons Mini-conference for Sixth Grade Girls”, and work with our Student Affiliate Groups to present chemical demonstrations at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Our December Herb Bassow Memorial Chemical Demonstration is an opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy the wonders of chemistry. We honor outstanding scientists at our Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial Lecture, the Philadelphia Section Award Lecture, and the Ullyot Lecture in the Public Interest. Our monthly newsletter, the Catalyst, will also keep you informed of Section events. the Catalyst is delivered to your address of record and can also be found on this website. So get involved! We welcome all members’ and student members’ participation in our activities. Come out to one of our free monthly lectures! Join a committee or two! Network with us! Talk about Chemistry at your child’s school! Nominate a candidate for a Section office or better yet, nominate yourself! Suggest a teacher or scientist for one of our awards! For information on any of our programs or committees, contact us at PhilaACS@aol.com or call 215-382-1589 and leave a message. With your help, 2008 can be an exciting year!
