Goals

  • 2006 (Steve Hughes, Chair) It’s an honor and a pleasure for me to begin serving as chair of the Illinois Heartland ACS Section. I hope I can continue in the tradition of the enthusiastic and hardworking individuals who preceded me in this office. During the past year I’ve had the opportunity to meet the staff who are planning the programs for this year and I know that the activities promise to be exciting, educational and enjoyable. Our primary goal is to hold meetings that present topics of wide interest, with informative and entertaining speakers, to foster interactions among ACS colleagues and between teachers and students and to provide the opportunity to network with other scientists for support and camaraderie. We have put together a list of speakers on a variety of timely subjects, including progress in medicine, developments in the chemical industry, and advances in research. The celebration of National Chemistry Week this year will focus on innovations through chemistry in the home. An instructional session for teachers with a conference and workshop is being organized. A highlight of the year will be a special outing for the whole family. We will conclude the summer with activities representing our section at the Illinois State Fair and bringing various Illinois sections together. A highly anticipated event is the annual Chemist of the Year banquet held in the Pere Marquette Hotel honoring the outstanding students and teachers in the section. We also have a fun-filled holiday meeting planned complete with an amazing magic act. I would like to thank you for your participation last year and look forward to seeing all of you at the meetings and events we have planned this year.
