ACS Orlando Section Executive Committee: Minutes from Meeting 3/8/08 Attendees Nahid Mohajeri, Roxanne Petzold, Clovis Linkous, Randy Fowler, Mike Hampton, Kevin Belfield, Nena, Carlos, Dr. Hernandez, Carol Peterson and Darlene Slattery Meeting at UCF Chemistry Bldg. started 9:00 AM 3/8/08 Introductions Chair’s Report (Darlene Slattery) No Report Chair- Elect’s Report (Kevin Belfield) Kevin went to ACS leadership conference in Dallas. He found it to be informative and helpful. Past-Chair’s Report (Nahid Mohajeri) 100 Students from Cambridge Elementary went to KSC They were introduced to the chemistry of rocket fuels Built model rockets and made fuels to launch them Went to the rocket ranch and IMAX theater Students are doing projects in school related to KSC experience August is the deadline for the next IPP Nahid will provide Kevin with contacts Secretary’s Report (Randy Fowler) No Report Treasurer’s Report (Carol Peterson) No Report Councilor’s Report (Brenda Odor) No Report. Brenda needs to provide summer and fall reports. Alternate Councilor’s Report(Clovis Linkous ) Clovis is going to the ACS spring meeting in New Orleans He was a science fair judge last month Chemistry Olympiad Committee & Newsletter Report (Ramee Indralingham) No Report Website Report (Glenn Smith) No Report Awards Committee Report (Darlene Slattery) Awards banquet went well and would recommend Olive Garden for next time. Not all awards had nominations Darlene could use help getting nominations for awards Old Business NCW imaginary molecule contest , we are looking for new ideas Possibly science theme stories reading to elementary students involving HS students Any NCW activities needs to be passed on to us for website and newsletter Charlene Hayden is having an activity at DBCC and wants to arrange joint activity with Bill Carroll as speaker. Bill is to speak at DBCC, FIT, possibly UCF and a HS around April 23-24
New Business Need more input for website Maybe create a page fro student affiliates Avogadro award is 5 years old and we have received checks from the other sections. We are sending the $602.23 awards check to the science fair Pittcon ads are in upcoming newsletter H2 symposium again this year in May 21, 2008 We will send a $1000 donation to FAME Lisa Scott and Dalhila Navarez should be nominees for Southeast Regional HS Teachers Awards. Need to seek more nominations from HS in our section. Hernandez to contact HS for nominations. Need to contact principles or science coordinator for counties in our section. Package has already been ordered for local exam in March for the Olympiad. Need to pick a date for exam. Up to 2 students from each HS for National and unlimited for HS for local testing 4 tour speakers this year March 17 at Rollins? EZ Chem. Demos will be the subject. Should be of interest to HS teachers. Kevin to help with planning. Maybe it can be held at the Orlando Science Center.
