The Executive Board of the Montana Section of the American Chemical Society met at September 22nd, 2002 Fall Social at Mammoth Hot Springs.  Board Members present: Cyd McClure-chair; Steve Holmgren-chair-elect; Andrea Stierle-secretary; Doug Cameron-treasurer; Doug Coe-Councilor; Don Stierle-past chair

Treasurer Doug Cameron reported that the section was doing very well. We had a net gain of $1400 (which would be lost once Andrea turned in receipts for Fall Social!) with $22,229 in a money market and $5935.60 in cash.

Councilor Doug Coe reported from the Chicago ACS meeting:

• ACS mtg registration has been adjusted-- it will no longer be more expensive for American Chemists to register for meetings.
• ACS membership will be available to chemists with AA degrees and five years of employment in a chemistry related area.
• there is a new web page for which we can design our own Web portal
• NCW is Nov. 4^th-10^th Celebrating Chemistry and Art
• should we provide the publication "Chemical Safety for Teachers" ($2.50/copy) for all 247 high schools in the state of Montana? The board voted "yes"

Cyd began the meeting by thanking the Stierles for organizing the meeting.

• Nomination of candidates for upcoming election. Concerted effort to involve University of Montana faculty. .Andrea suggested that it was not appropriate to have a Montana Tech chair at this time as the secretary, treasurer, and councilor are already Tech faculty. No candidates were proposed at this time, although Cyd thought she could encourage a few people to consider running. We discussed inviting local chemists to be our Spring and Fall keynote speakers to encourage participation. Andrea said she would look into inviting UM faculty to provide Spring keynote.

• Spring Meeting in Miniature date was discussed--- don't want it to overlap with spring national meeting --- April 7^th-11^th. Andrea agreed she would try to select a date that accommodated the majority of schedules. The Board agreed to keep the meeting at Montana Tech and to keep it separate from the MAS meeting.

• Cyd suggested that we send the chair-elect and the new chair to the Local Section officers meeting. It was a moot point as our elections were too late to accommodate this arrangement.

• Time to get moving on NORM. Ed Rosenberg and Don Stierle have agreed to be program chairs. They will attend the NORM planning meeting this March. The Board thought we should development a series of symposia for the NORM meeting. Suggested topics included --- ACID MINE DRAINAGE; HIGH SCHOOL TEACHING STRATEGIES...

• Cyd commented on the career workshops offered by ACS for $300/day. We discussed merits of using these workshops for the NORM or as part of the Spring Meeting in Miniature. We thought the logistics for the Meeting in Miniature might be difficult, but it was agreed to have a career workshop as part of the NORM.

• A reminder that the Board agreed that we needed to nominate another high school teacher for the ACS Outstanding High School Teacher Award. Gary Freebury provided some suggested guidelines for selection of the nominee:

1.     They must be currently teaching at least 1 period of chemistry.

2.     They must be a current member of the CHMst organization which is an affiliate of the Montana           Section of ACS.

3.     They must have their students participate in the Montana Chemistry Olympiad.

The recipient will receive two years of membership in the National ACS and 2 years subscription to the Journal of Chem Ed. In addition to this they will be expected to particpate in a program with the Montana Section of ACS. The Board concurred that these were reasonable guidelines.
