Local=20 Section Fall = Social.

The annual Montana =
Fall Social is held every year=20
in the later part of October. This social has been=20
going on for over 20 years and keeps growing each=20
year. The social was held in Chico Hot Springs,=20
Montana and members from Montana Tech, University of=20
Montana, Carroll College, and Montana State=20
University were present. Undegraduates gave research=20
posters followed by a dinner time talk by Professor=20
Nicholas Natale on the moles and =
chemistry.

Annual=20 Spring Miniature = Meeting

The annual Spring =
Miniature meeting was held at=20
Montana Tech with undergraduates and graduate=20
students presenting their research in a morning and=20
afternoon session. The turn out was very good with=20
several new professors attending from Montana State=20
University. Three undergraduates and three graduate=20
students were awarded travel stipends to ACS regional=20
and national meetings for best presentations,=20
afterwards the ACS business meeting was =
conducted.

division has a new long time ACS board=20
member from the Idaho section join our Montana=20
Section. Nicholas Natale is our National Chemistry=20
Week coordinator and worked with a new outreach=20
program in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department at=20
the University of Montana in performing chemistry=20
demonstrations for K-8 kids. Professor Natale expects=20
to expand his program to a larger audience in =
2008.

                  Attainment. The Local Section Activities Committee =

One of the big =
goals achieved in 2007, was getting=20
more faculty and student involvment in our annual=20
spring and minature meeting. We definitely raised the=20
bar this past year with far more involvement by=20
undergraduates in the research talks. This is in part=20
due to harder recruitment by our board members to our=20
local larger universities. Another part was to=20
increase and travel award stipends amount and numbers=20
for best research talks by undergraduates and=20
graduates. Another goal attained this year was better=20
cohesiveness in bringing in a ACS tour speaker=20
through the western schools of Montana, Utah and=20
Wyoming. Three speakers are already scheduled through=20
the Montana section in 2008.

We are a small ACS =
section which covers the entire=20
state of Montana. Our over 230 ACS members are spread=20
across all of Montana, so it is not easy for all of=20
us to gather monthly, hence we have traditionally met=20
twice a year in the fall and spring for our business=20
meetings. We have a very strong and committed ACS=20
board in which most members double up on duties. We=20
are able to cover all of the important board=20
positions. We are making very good inroads at this=20
time to get a high school chemistry teacher, a native=20
american tribal science teacher and industrial=20
chemist involved with our board. The ACS SEED program=20
has been alive and well at the University of Montana.=20
I would like to see this expand to some other four=20
year colleges in our ACS =

At the fall ACS =
local section business meeting a=20
few new items were discussed for the future of the=20
local section. With two old time high school ACS=20
members retiring there is a large hole in=20
representation from high school chemistry teachers,=20
how to bring in a high school chemistry teacher=20
representative into our section. We extended an=20
invitation to one teacher in Whitefish Montana.=20
Another topic of discussion was how to get any=20
representation from any of our seven Native American=20
Tribal Colleges invovled. We have invited a science=20
teacher from Chief Dull Knife Tribal College in Lame=20
Deer Montana to join the local board. In this way we=20
hope we can begin at some level in working with at=20
least one Native American Tribal College. A third=20
goal is to solicit a member from industry into the=20
local Section. One our members will work on getting a=20
representative from Glaxo Wellcome in Hamilton=20
Montana onboard as an industrial =

On a personal note, =
I see the ACS SEED program=20
growing on one campus with it being integrated into=20
other outreach programs in collaboration with other=20
departments on campuses. I see more growth in our=20
local section and look forward to the new=20
representation link to a native american tribal=20
college. I also believe we need to move forward with=20
a high school chemistry teacher represented on our=20
board so we can have an inside track on=20
the 'hearbeat' of what is going on in high school=20
chemistry in the state. We are also looking into a=20
graduate chemistry student representative on our=20
board that would hopefully be a voice and conduit to=20
other graduate and undergraduate chemistry majors in=20
the state to become involved in the local section and=20
in turn refresh the section with new ideas, thoughts=20
and potentially new avenues to pursue in recruiting=20
younger =
