Gearing Up for NCW!

National Chemistry Week (NCW) is only a few months away, and the Office of Community Activities has been working very closely with the Committee on Community Activities to organize an unforgettable anniversary celebration for the fall national meeting in Boston, MA. If you are not going to Boston, you can join the celebration in other ways. (Read NCW Celebrates 20 Years).

NCW 20th Anniversary—the Many Faces of Chemistry
NCW celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with the theme, “The Many Faces of Chemistry.” The theme focuses on chemistry disciplines and the variety of careers associated with chemistry. It also gives volunteers an opportunity to highlight the chemists within their communities who have made contributions professionally or through their volunteer work. What a way to highlight the profession and its diversity!

Ordering Publications for NCW
Orders for Celebrating Chemistry, ChemMatters, The Journal of Chemical Education, and other giveaway items can be placed through an online order form starting mid-July. Check the NCW website after July 15 to obtain and submit your form.

To ensure that you receive your products in time for your NCW celebration, all coordinators are asked to place their orders by September 28. Any orders received after the deadline may not arrive in a timely fashion or may be subject to additional charges if rush shipping is requested. Avoid the crunch and place your order in August!

En Espanol Tambien—In Spanish, Too!
A limited number of the Spanish-edition of Celebrating Chemistry will be available for NCW’s 20th anniversary. Be sure to indicate how many you would like on the online order form. Spanish versions of all activities and articles will also be available at chemistry.org/chicos.

Event and Coordinator Look-Ups Available Soon!
We are excited to offer you, once again, an Event Look-Up! You can submit information about your NCW event and search for others with the Event Look-Up. Please follow the directions on the welcome page to submit information. Events entered into the database will be displayed within 24 hours. The NCW homepage also links to the database, which can also be used to promote other community outreach events.

The Coordinator Look-Up feature is also on the NCW homepage. This allows an interested party to look up your name and send you a message, but it does not disclose your e-mail address. The Look-Up will be updated with all current coordinators on record with our office the first week in July. If your section has not named a coordinator, please identify one and e-mail the appointed person’s contact information to ncw@acs.org.

CCED—Breaking Records
The 2007 CCED celebration occurred in 120 local sections, with 138 coordinators leading the efforts within their communities. This represents an increase of more than 30% local section and coordinator participation from 2006. Based upon numbers generated by the North American Precis Syndicate (NAPS, an editorial content distributor), more than 19 million people were reached for the celebration through various articles: NAPS generated 316 newspaper articles in 21 states.
