Advanced Leadership Conference Planned for mid-October in Memphis

The Office of Local Section Activities and the Local Section Activities Committee is presenting its third annual Local Section Advanced Leadership Conference, from October 14–16, in Memphis , TN. The conference will provide an opportunity for graduates of the local section track of the ACS Leaders Conference, held this past January in Baltimore , to build upon what they have previously learned. Registration opens at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14. For participants able to arrive early, conference facilitators will conduct an optional review session of selected management functions, including budget administration and the use of SOLAR, the online system for filing the required local section annual report. The conference proper begins at 2:00 p.m. , Friday, and continues until 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

While the January conference focused on to how to manage local sections, i.e., how to handle the day-to-day affairs of a local section, the October conference will concentrate on leadership topics. What is leadership, as distinct from management? How does my personal style influence my efforts in running my local section? What long-term impact will my year of service have upon my section when my term of office has ended?

During one session, attendees will review results of an online survey that they will have completed in early fall prior to the leadership weekend. The results of the survey will focus on the leaders' personal leadership and work style preferences. By understanding their personal leadership styles, delegates will better understand the impact they have on their respective local section's group dynamics.

Besides helping participants in their approach to leadership, the Advanced Leadership Conference aims to assist leaders in transforming their tentative goals, defined in January, into solid objectives for their year of leadership. Other goals include further developing delegates' skills in effective team building and assisting them in mobilizing their local section teams to achieve every section's goals. Finally, the Leadership Conference will help refine the delegate's vision for his or her local section's future and foster growth for broader ACS leadership roles beyond the local section.
