Strategic Directions—2007 and Beyond!

The American Chemical Society has developed an exciting new set of Strategic Directions for 2007 and Beyond in support of the ACS Vision: "Improving people's lives through the transforming power of chemistry." These directions will form the basis for a Strategic Plan that is currently being developed by ACS members, committees, and governance. All ACS members, stakeholders and interested parties were invited to contribute to the current framework, which reflects thousands of their comments and survey responses. The online document has a built-in feedback mechanism, where members can continue to make suggestions about the directions as they evolve from year to year. The Strategic Directions also feature links to numerous ACS programs, so that readers can “See How” the Society plans to accomplish these objectives.

ACS Local Sections can play a major role in supporting the Strategic Directions. Due to the sections ability to focus on 190 geographical areas, the Society is able tap into the wisdom of the many individual chemists and chemical engineers. Local Sections serve as places where the important issues that are shaping ACS and the future of chemistry can be measured and debated. ACS calls upon our local sections to use their connections to “advance the broader chemistry enterprise for the benefit of Earth and its people.” As in the past, the Society pledges to continue to provide information, programs, products, and services to give members the highest value for their involvement.

The directions have four main themes for the Society to work towards:

  • External Value: ACS will be renowned worldwide for its leadership in enabling the scientific community to solve the humanity’s most pressing challenges creatively.
  • Internal Value: ACS will continue to be the premier chemical professional organization that promotes innovation and advances the chemical sciences and its practitioners.
  • Member Value: ACS will continue to enable its members to advance their careers and become leaders of the chemistry enterprise.
  • A Solid Foundation: ACS will have the capacity it needs to be a positive force within the chemistry enterprise, delivering value to its members and the public.

You are invited to review the plan, “See How” ACS is working to realize its Vision, and to "join the discussion" regarding the overall plan and its themes. Together, through collaborative engagement, all members can continue to benefit from their involvement with ACS, and improve people's lives through the transforming power of chemistry as well.
