| 2008 Local Section Chairs-Elect Invited to the first ACS Leadership Institute If you have been elected the chair-elect of your local section for 2008, you are invited to attend the ACS Leadership Institute which will be held in Dallas, TX, at the Intercontinental Hotel, January 25–27. You will have the opportunity to enroll in courses that are part of the new ACS Leadership Development System as well as attend sessions specifically designed for local section leaders in order to learn to manage your local section efficiently and effectively. Chair's CommentLocal Sections: Moving Forward Together As the new chair of the ACS Committee on Local Section Activities (LSAC), I am excited about the opportunity to meet and work with so many outstanding volunteers across the country who are carrying out the ACS mission within local sections. In 2008 LSAC will be focusing on several core programming opportunities to help local section officers achieve their objectives and to advance the ACS Strategic Plan. More>> What’s So Important about YOUR Annual Report? Around this time every year, local section chairs start to fret about the upcoming deadline for the annual report. These concerns are not unfounded. However, with a little delegation and organization, completing your section’s annual report can be both a relatively simple task and a rewarding exercise. More>> New ChemLuminary Award to be Given in 2009 The ACS Committee on Local Section Activities would like to announce a new ChemLuminary Award to be awarded in 2009. This award will recognize a local section for an alliance with another group that results in a successful activity. More>> Girls in Science Event Held at Eastern Oregon University For this publication, the Office of Local Section Activities is highlighting the Sixth Girls in Science Event that was held at the Eastern Oregon University (EOU) and sponsored in part by the Richland Local Section Committee for Women and Minority Affairs. This successful event for middle-school girls is a clear example of how collaboration with several groups can expand your volunteer pool and the number of participants. More>> 2007 Local Section Teleconference Series: Promoting Diversity in Your Local Section Teleconference The Committee on Local Section Activities, the Committee on Minority Affairs, and the Department of Local Section and Community Activities sponsored a teleconference for all local section officers on November 15, 2007, on promoting diversity in your local section. Representatives from four local sections spoke about their diversity initiatives and then answered questions from participants. Coming Soon – ACS Strategic Plan for 2008 and Beyond In December, the Board of Directors approved a new strategic plan for 2008 and beyond for the American Chemical Society. More>> LSAC Announces First Teleconference for 2008 Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED) will be the theme for the first LSAC teleconference scheduled for Wednesday, January 30, 2008, 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time). Members of the Committee on Community Activities (CCA) and local section CCED coordinators will discuss past successful programs in hopes of providing other local sections will ideas for this year’s event. Event Planned in New Orleans for Local Section Members If you are planning to be at the ACS Spring National Meeting in New Orleans, please be sure to attend the LSAC (Committee on Local Section Activities) Open Meeting on Tuesday, April 8, 3 – 4 p.m. in the Oak Alley Room of the Sheraton New Orleans. It will be immediately followed by the Local Section Officers & Tour Speakers Reception with Hospitality Awards, 4 – 6 p.m., in the Sheraton’s Bayside Ballroom A – C! See you there! Get in on the Act: The Local Section High School Chemistry Club Connection Demonstration shows for elementary school students, Hands-on Activities, Chemists Celebrate Earth Day programs, fundraisers, meetings, luncheons, awards ceremonies, talks, National Chemistry Week activities, officer elections—this list could describe the programming for an active ACS Local Section or a Student Affiliates Chapter.
