Science Cafes Funding Still Available
If your local section is considering hosting a Science Café in 2007, minigrants of $500 are still available. New Awakenings: The Value of an Open Meeting to Your Local Section
A common challenge for ACS local sections is participation in meetings, programs, and events. During the last several years, a number of local sections have worked with the Local Section Activities Committee (LSAC) and ACS staff to host a new kind of ACS local section program, the open meeting. This forum is designed to bring together your core group of ACS volunteers with new or less active members from your local section. The result can be transforming both in participation and programming for the local section. More>>

Spotlight on ACS
964 Fifty-Year ACS Members Honored in 2007
In 2007, 964 ACS members will be honored for reaching the 50-year milestone. In late February, a special ruby pin and a 50-year membership card, which entitles them to free attendance at all ACS meetings, will be sent to them in grateful appreciation of their many years of service to the Society. This elite group will also be recognized at local section award ceremonies in the coming months, where they will each be presented with a handsome 50-year membership certificate to mark the occasion. Chairs and award chairs will receive these 50-year membership certificates for their local sections in late February. Members who join the ranks of 50-year status in 2007 will also be listed in a special issue of Chemical & Engineering News in April. For more information about the program, please contact Patricia Martin or call (202) 872-4577.
On Tour with the ACS Speaker Service
Housed in the ACS Office of Local Section Activities, the Speaker Service has been in existence for 71 years and is one of the most beloved volunteer programs in the Society. Chemical & Engineering News traveled with former ACS President Ned D. Heindel on a recent speaker’s tour to learn more about how this program works for local sections. Follow the On the Road Tour. 'An Evening of Chemistry'
Presented by the Tulsa Local Section
Tulsa Local Section
Many ACS local sections have one issue in common – declining attendance at section meetings and events. The Tulsa Local Section revitalized their chemistry community by sponsoring an evening of networking and collaborative discussion. Participation by ACS members in our local section had been progressively declining in recent year. Although there are over 200 registered ACS members in our section, the actual number of active participants can be counted on one or two hands. More>>

E-lements of Communication
Appearing the third Friday of every month, E-lements of Communication is an e-mail newsletter from the ACS Office of Communications that highlights five recent news releases or other public-relations efforts. Each item is about a paragraph long and describes broadly the news story or event highlighted. Usually three or four of the items discuss the Office of Communications’ latest news releases and link to the full releases on the ACS News Service. The remaining item or items are devoted to recent National Historic Chemical Landmarks, new videos, or other events and link to the relevant pages on chemistry.org.

The E-lements of Communication is e-mailed to ACS members interested in public relations. To join our e-mail list, please contact a_fulwood@acs.org.
