Local Sections Reach Milestones
In 2006, four local sections will celebrate their 100-year anniversary -- East Central Illinois; Indiana-Kentucky Border; Louisiana; and Minnesota. Other milestones this year include the Virginia Blue Ridge Section with 75 years; Southwest Georgia-25 years; California Las Padres at 10 years; and our youngest local section, Middle Georgia, already with 5 years of existence.

These local sections are to be congratulated for their many years of providing a network opportunity for chemists and for promoting chemistry in local communities. While these are major milestones for the above local sections, let’s not forget that there are 181 additional sections that have reached milestones including 19 that have surpassed the 100-year mark!

Don’t Do It All Yourself, Find A Partner!
If two heads are better than one, a large group will often be better than two smaller, isolated ones.
Previously we discussed how to build internal alliances with National ACS Offices and with other Sections, Divisions, and groups. This article gives some thoughts on the “who”, “why”, and “how” of interacting with groups external to ACS.

Spotlight On ACS

Inform Congress About Chemistry
Less than 5% of the 535 members of Congress have backgrounds in science and engineering. Yet everyday, legislators like yours are asked to make important decisions that affect our nation’s scientific enterprise. You can help them make informed decisions by participating in ACS’ 2006 Contact Congress Week (February 20–24).

50-Year ACS Members To Be Recognized
In grateful appreciation of the many years of service that our 50-year members have given to the Society, a special ruby pin and a 50-year membership card, entitling the bearer to free attendance at all ACS meetings, will be sent to all 50 year members in mid-February. Local sections can help celebrate as well, and will be sent 50-year membership certificates to present to their members who have reached his milestone. Chairs or awards chairs can expect to receive these 50-year member certificates for their local sections in January. In April, the 802 members who join the ranks of this elite group will be listed in a special issue of C&EN. For more information about the program, please contact Brenda Douglas.
