Leading Together
The Quarterly Newsletter for ACS Local Section Officers

Dr. Percy L. Julian, "Forgotten Genius"
The film “Forgotten Genius” has now been made by NOVA/WGBH, with some critical and timely support from ACS. It will broadcast nationally on public television, February 6, 2007. In a very real sense, we will come full circle when we gather in San Francisco at the 232nd ACS National Meeting to celebrate the making and screening of the film. More>>

Local Sections and The Future: A Peek at Some Behind-the-Scenes Activity
The Local Section Activities Committee (LSAC) has initiated a process to take a detailed look at our sections, our membership, and our society to see how LSAC might help sections assess the future and best serve member and society needs. This process was developed to examine the ACS experience at the local level. As the profession, the society, and the practice of chemistry continue to evolve, LSAC hopes to advance conversation about how local sections can best meet the needs of our diverse audiences as we go forward into the 21st century. Tools and Tips for Success
Succession Planning In Your Local Section
The main question that dedicated ACS volunteers continually ask is, “How do I get people involved in the governance and workings of our local section and ensure that leaders are identified and prepared?” Where do these people come from, and why would they want to get involved? Once the volunteers are recruited, how do I keep them involved and help them reach their full potential? More>>

How to Ease the Workload of the Executive Committee in the Small-to-Medium-Size Local Sections
It is sometimes difficult to recruit volunteers to run for officer positions in local sections. In some small-to-medium size local sections, one person may hold several offices. As a volunteer, this can be challenging as one has to balance the responsibilities of two or three officer positions as well as his/her personal life. Have you thought about asking members of your community to assist with this overload? Here are some ways to ease the demands of core officers. More>>

Tri-sectional Synergies
Do you ever wonder what that bordering local section is up to? Could more professional and social interactions take place among adjacent local sections? More>>
Profit from Partnerships at Regional Meetings—What You Gain will be Measured Not Just in Dollars and Cents!
Regional meetings provide an outstanding opportunity for local sections that organize them to develop and enhance partnerships with various groups within and outside the ACS. Indeed, some of the most compelling reasons to organize a regional meeting are the opportunity to re-energize your section, partner with the scientific community, and expand your leadership pool. Some of the most important benefits of a regional meeting appear during the years after the meeting! More

Why Not Start a Silver Circle Group in Your Section?
The term “Silver Circle” originated in 2003 when Past ACS President Eli Pearce used it to designate mature ACS members who are described as “silver” because of their valuable experience and knowledge. Silver Circle members can be a great resource to any section. More>>

The Chemistry of Cooking
In an effort to attract younger chemists, the Delaware local section sponsored a very successful event in which the local YCC and students from the University of Delaware spent an evening at a local restaurant learning about the chemistry of cooking and the science involved with wine-making and flavor-matching. Making Use of C&EN Online
Chemical & Engineering News delivers comprehensive coverage of the chemical world on a weekly basis. But did you know that C&EN Online, while providing the same content as the print edition—and then some—can also be a helpful resource for local sections? More>>
