| Dr. Percy L. Julian: A Trailblazing Inspirational Scientist (on DVD) On sale now at the ACS Online Store, this remarkable film created by NOVA, Percy Julian: Forgotten Genius, tells the life story of a trailblazing African-American chemist, Dr. Percy Levon Julian. NOVA uses period reenactments based on newly accessible family archives and interviews to bring to life the gripping biography of this world-class scientist. The film tells a story that is largely unknown. It is narrated by Courtney Vance, and the part of Dr. Julian is played by the Tony Award-winning actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson. The story of Dr. Julian’s life is one of courage, dedication, perseverance, and triumph against overwhelming odds. Born in Montgomery, AL, on April 11, 1899, and the grandson of slaves, he overcame Jim Crow segregation and a series of racial obstacles to graduate first in his class from DePauw University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He earned advanced degrees from Harvard and the University of Vienna. He went on to become a chemist of international stature. Discrimination led Dr. Julian from academia to business, and in 1953, he established Julian Laboratories to produce synthetic steroids. He became a self-made millionaire when he sold his laboratories in 1961, and by the 1970s, he was widely recognized as an innovator who made medicines more affordable. Dr. Julian received 18 honorary degrees and more than a dozen civic and scientific awards for his contributions to science, humanity, and civil rights. He was the second African-American elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the first chemist. Dr. Julian married Anna Johnson in 1935, and they had two children, Percy, Jr., and Faith. Dr. and Mrs. Julian were devoted parents. His solid work as a chemist and civic activist and his dedication to his family were a testament to his character. Dr. Julian died of liver cancer in 1975 at the age of 76. ACS believes Dr. Julian’s life story is inspiring to all scientists, particularly to our youth. Moreover, his story may inspire those who had not considered a life in science to follow that path. We encourage you to share this video with schools, libraries and other organizations in your local section. Supported by the ACS Department of Diversity Programs, ACS makes Percy Julian’s remarkable story available on DVD to ACS members. ACS Online Store (Item #PJDVD) $10 |
