Conference Planned for Baltimore in January
Following last winter’s successful ACS Leaders Conference,
ACS will again conduct a combined Leadership Conference for leaders in
local sections, divisions, committees, regions, and several other component
groups. Recognized by The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE)
in 1997 with the Chapter Relations Pyramid Award of Excellence, the leadership
conferences have been developing and continually improving for more than
40 years and are the envy of many other associations. This year’s
conference is slated for January 28–30 in Baltimore, Maryland, and
the Marriott Waterfront (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/BWIWF)
will host the conference, which promises to combine stimulating presentations,
effective learning activities, networking opportunities, good food, and
fuel to “light the fire” as local section chair-elects prepare
to assume leadership in 2006.
All chairs-elect should plan to attend the 2005 Leadership
Conference. Cost is subsidized so that your section pays only $275 per
registrant towards the cost of hotel, meals, refreshment breaks, and conference
materials. Participants will learn to “work smarter, not harder”
as they conduct their local section’s business during their year
of leadership. By honing management skills of planning, organizing, delegating,
delivering, and evaluating programs, products, and services, section leaders
will add value to their local section member’s participation in
their local section while at the same time contributing to the overall
success of ACS and their own professional and personal development.
Presentations at the training will include reflections
on leadership, thoughts on building diversity into local section membership
and activities, strategies on maximizing volunteers, techniques for improving
communication skills, an overview of the ACS governance structure, methods
for planning and goal setting, and other useful topics. ACS presenters
will include President, Bill Carroll, CEO, Madeleine Jacobs; members of
the Office of Local Section Activities; and other staff, including Secretary,
Flint Lewis. Jeffrey Cuafade, an external facilitator specializing in
will give the opening keynote address. Additionally, chairs of various
committees will host meal events and related functions.
The conference will feature general sessions for all conference
attendees; joint sessions of two or more tracks participating and several
breakout sessions on cogent topics. Finally, of course, conference goers
will learn about issues specific to their own particular group in sessions
designed for each of the six individual tracks.
The local section officers track will include training
on how local sections fit into the big picture of ACS; management tools
and resources such as the monthly planner, local section bylaws, demographic
data, and bimonthly rosters; preparing annual reports; utilizing the Speaker
Service; conducting community outreach; planning lively and effective
meetings; and leader succession planning.
The weekend is certain to inspire you and prepare you
for service! For more information, visit http://www.chemistry.org/portal/a/c/s/1/acsdisplay.html?DOC=localsections%5Clsleadrs.html.
