Leadership Training Available for 2004 Leadership Conference Alumni
The ACS Leaders Conference, which was held this past winter
in New Orleans, equipped attendees with the basics of managing a local
section. Now it’s time for those attendees to step up to the next
level of preparation, which will be offered October 8-10 in St. Louis:
The ACS Advanced Leadership Conference (ALC).
The ALC goes well beyond the basics of organizing and managing the work
of a local section, concentrating in addition on the true leadership skills
and techniques that leaders need to master and practice throughout their
term of office. This conference will help leaders discover their own unique
leadership traits and talents. They will also learn how to play to their
strengths in their interactions with other key leaders throughout their
local section service area—leaders who, in turn, make decisions
that impact the field of chemistry (e.g., a corporate executive, a chamber
of commerce president, a local school board chair, etc.).
This conference goes far beyond the nuts and bolts of managing a local
section. By following the principle of delegation that was stressed in
New Orleans, participants will learn how to empower volunteers to develop
and monitor the major activities of their local sections in concert with
various committees.
The ALC will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 8, and adjourn by noon
Sunday. The registration fee is $275, which covers two nights’ lodging,
all meals, and all conference materials. Local sections are responsible
for other costs, such as transportation. Jeff Cufaude, who conducted several
of the general sessions in New Orleans, will lead the conference program.
Assisting throughout the weekend will be a number of past chairs of local
sections, members of the ACS Board of Directors, members of the Local
Section Activities Committee, and ACS staff. Participants will receive
personalized attention throughout the weekend and will leave St. Louis
with new insights and skills that maximize their upcoming term of office.
Many of last year’s participants told us that this was “the
best professional development experience” of their lives. This year’s
conference will be even better!
The number of seats for the ALC is limited—and they are going fast.
Attendance is restricted to those who attended the ACS Leaders Conference
this past February. For more information please call 202.872.4610 or
register on-line.
