Name of Proposal and Brief Description:

“Safety in the High School Laboratory”

A workshop for high school chemistry teachers and other science stockroom persons in the area to focus on safety in regards to storage of chemicals, waste management and laboratory procedures.

Co-Sponsoring Local Sections:        None

Co-Sponsoring Divisions:                 None

Program Description:           A one day Laboratory Safety workshop will be held in a location near the geographical center of the Kentucky Lake Section.  Invitations will be sent to secondary school systems within the Section encouraging administrators to allow their laboratory science teachers to attend.  The workshop will be advertised as a “Professional Development” event which may meet local requirements for in-service hours but no continuing education units (CEUs) will be issued.   There will be no charge for attendance but pre-registration will be required.  Those pre-registered will receive guidance documents and reference materials for laboratory safety, hazardous materials handling, and hazardous waste management.  Both invited speakers and local resources will be utilized to provide seminars on relevant topics.

Event:                         Laboratory Safety Workshop.   Preliminary topics to be covered include:

·         Personal Protective Equipment

·         MSDS

·         Experimental Design for Hazard Minimization

·         Waste Management/Environmental Stewardship

·         Proper Storage of Hazardous Materials

·         Storeroom Inventory and Shelf Life

·         General Laboratory Safety

Literature will be provided for attendees to take home.

Our speakers will be encouraged to use live demonstrations and multi-media presentation aids whenever possible.

Light snacks and beverages will be provided two or three times during the workshop.  Attendees will be responsible for their own lunch.  Mileage reimbursement will be provided for one vehicle from each school system.

Program Impact:       Because of anecdotal observations of rusty cans of ethyl ether, pounds of mercury, jars with corroded tops or illegible labels, combined storage of acids and bases, etc. in our high schools, members of our section believe there is an urgent need for reform in the way our secondary school chemical storerooms are managed.   This workshop will not correct years of neglect but it is hoped that teachers and managers will be made aware of overlooked hazards and of the resources and options they have to remove those hazards.  It is hoped that the ultimate impact of this workshop will be to create a better, safer place for our children to have their first laboratory experience.

Budget:                       Up to a maximum $2994 based on the following formula ;

1)      48.5 cents per mile for travel expense for each participating school district. (Estimated total 15 districts traveling 100 miles round trip $728)

2)      Up to $300 for light snacks and beverages for 25 attendees.

3)      Up to $1000 travel reimbursement for invited speakers.

(2 hotel rooms at $100 plus $800 total mileage.)

4)      Up to $130 for advertising and postage.

5)      Up to $586 for literature purchase and reproduction expenses to including the following:

a.      NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards @ $15 each + 15% shipping with CD PDF version and tutorial for its use ($431)

b.      ACS - Chemical Safety for Teachers and Their Supervisors, Grades 7-12 @ $2.50 each + 15% shipping ($72)

c.       Laboratory Safety Institute's "The Golden Rules of Chemical Waste Disposal" wall chart reproduced locally for $3.30 each with approval from LSI. ($83)

2.      Up to $250 contingency. (APPROVAL PENDING)

Evaluation Plan:        After completion of the workshop, surveys will be distributed to presenters and attendees.  Feedback from the participants will be evaluated by the Local Section Executive Committee.  A brief report evaluating the workshop will be written and forwarded to the National ACS Office of Local Activities.
