Program Description: A one day
Laboratory Safety workshop will be held in a location near the

continuing education units (CEUs) will be issued.
There will be no charge for attendance but pre-registration
will be required. Those
pre-registered will receive guidance documents and reference

Our speakers will be encouraged to use live demonstrations and
multi-media presentation aids whenever possible.
Light snacks and beverages will be provided two or three times during
the workshop. Attendees
will be responsible for their own lunch.
Mileage reimbursement will be provided for one vehicle from
each school system.
Program Impact: Because of anecdotal observations
of rusty cans of ethyl ether, pounds of mercury, jars with corroded
tops or illegible labels, combined storage of acids and bases, etc.
in our high schools, members of our section believe there is an
urgent need for reform in the way our secondary school chemical
storerooms are managed.
This workshop will not correct years of neglect but it is
hoped that teachers and managers will be made aware of overlooked
hazards and of the resources and options they have to remove those
hazards. It is hoped
that the ultimate impact of this workshop will be to create a
better, safer place for our children to have their first laboratory
experience.
