SAN FRANCISCO MEETING - SPRING 2000 (3/26-31)

The 219th ACS Natl. Mtg. in San Francisco, with over 8200 technical talks, attracted 18,521 attendees, a record-breaker. At the Expo., 289 companies flashed their wares in 488 booths. At ACS Pubs. booth, C&ENews reported that "C&EN Online" is FREE to ACS members and other subscribers to the printed version. (Website: http://pubs.acs.org/cen). Dept. of Career Services provided, through NECH, for 165 employers and 1053 job seekers to have over 3000 interviews for 723 jobs (up 34%).

Events hosted by ACS President Daryle Busch included "Beyond the Technology of Biotechnology: Government Regulations and Consumer Acceptance" and "Chemistry in the 21st Century: The Partnership Between Education, Industry, the Media, and Science Policy -- The Four-Legged Stool" (Go on-line for more details in the 4/3/00 issue, p. 13).

Council voted down the automatic dues increase for 2001. Dues remain $108. Candidates for 2001 ACS president-elect, selected by Council from a field of four, are Glenn Crosby, Prof.of Chem. at Washington State University, and Eli Pearce, Univ. Res. Professor at Polytechnic Institute, Brooklyn. Both are on the ACS Board and will run in the ACS Fall Election. Council heard the candidates for Reg. I Director (Incumbent Michael Strem vs. Ann O'Brien) and Reg. V Director (incumbent Ann Nally vs. T.L. Brown). For two Dir.-At-Large were Joan Shields, incumbent vs. Nina Roscher and Hank Whelen, incumbent, vs. Jim Shoffner. Strem and Whelen are I&EC members. (Ck. Web for more details.)
