HELP CELEBRATE I&EC's 100th YEAR!

We were the first Division organized in the ACS, back in 1908, and our 100th birthday is coming up. We are planning special events at the 2008 meetings in both New Orleans and Philadelphia. I&EC needs your help in our centennial celebration projects.

We have laid out some ambitious plans for the centennial. These plans include receptions for both the New Orleans meeting and the Philadelphia meeting, relevant symposia at both meetings, and a promotional campaign to educate people about, and call attention to, this significant milestone in both our history and the Society's history. ACS headquarters and the Chemical Heritage Foundation, among others, are now aware of the I&EC Centennial and are beginning to help us along. We expect to get major support also from the industries that I&EC has served so ably in the past 100 years.

We need volunteers to help organize symposia and events in 2008 and to contact companies.  Please let the organizers know if you can help out!

We are continuing with plans for the Centennial Book.  There is still a need for authors and reviewers.  Can you: identify potential authors for the book, review a book chapter, organize or contribute to a symposium on sessions covering related groups of topics under the general title of "I&EC Centennial: Gateway to the Future,"or help work on publicizing all these events? If you can help with any of these activities, then I&EC Needs You!

A list of topics not yet covered is given below.

Air separation

Ammoxidation

Polyamides

Polyesters

Sorbex-type separations

Superconductivity

Teflon

Thermosets

Wacker Process & homogeneous catalysis Ziegler-Natta Polymerization

Chair’s Message to the I&EC Division

Mike Matthews

Department of Chemical Engineering

University of South Carolina

Text Box:

It’s a great time to be an active member of the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry (I&EC) Division! As we prepare to celebrate the centennial of the founding of IEC in 2008, we can take great pride in a century of “Putting Science to Work,” which is the motto adopted by our leadership in 2003. Elsewhere in this newsletter you can read more about some of the activities planned in recognition of this event in 2008 at both the New Orleans and Philadelphia national meetings. A book detailing the past and future of the science and engineering behind some of industry’s greatest successes is well underway. A series of technical symposia and other articles will appear as well. Make plans to attend the meetings and the special events commemorating this milestone!

In 2007, I&EC has instituted a new award, the “IEC Fellows Award,” which recognizes outstanding research and service with an emphasis on collaborative work. Thanks to the hard work of Dr. Spiros Alexandratos and the awards committee, we are recognizing two outstanding members at the Chicago meeting in 2007. Dr. Rich Noble of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Colorado is a leader in the field of separations science, and is a past chair of our Separation Science and Technology Subdivision, as well as the Separations Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has published over 200 papers and holds 19 patents in the area of gas separations; facilitated transport in membranes and zeolites is just one of the areas influenced by of his work. Dr. H. S. Muralidhara is also an expert in separations, with over 25 years experience in industry. Dr. Murali has developed a number of new processes for industrial separations, including a method for removing phospholipids from vegetable oil miscella, a process for producing oilseed protein products, and a process for producing sterols and tocopherols (natural vitamin E). IEC is proud to recognize these outstanding accomplishments. In addition, the E.V. Murphree Award in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry for 2007 is awarded to Dr. Wolfgang Holderich. This award, which is sponsored through ACS by ExxonMobil, recognizes Dr. Holderich’s particular contributions in heterogeneous catalysis. Special symposia in honor of all these scholars are being held in Chicago.

I would like to thank our past-chair, Rich Sachleben of Momenta Pharmaceuticals, as well as all our division and subdivision officers, session chairs, and other volunteers for their hard work and accomplishments in the past year. The names of our officers are listed at the end of this newsletter. The names of our session chairs and other volunteers appear in the various meeting programs and are too numerous to list here. The efforts put forth to organize meetings, communicate with speakers, keep the books, run meetings, and to engage our division membership are truly inspiring, and we all owe them a great deal.

These volunteer efforts are essential to the value provided by ACS and to our Division in general. The vision of the ACS is Improving people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry. While society in general may take many things for granted, those of us “in the business” realize that transformations take place only because of the focused, concerted effort of many people for a long time. The joy of improving people’s lives is one of the most powerful benefits of being an ACS member and an I&EC volunteer. I would like to encourage all of you to consider assuming leadership positions where you can make a difference. This could be through one of our subdivisions (Green Chemistry and Engineering; Novel Chemistry With Industrial Applications; Separation Science and Technology, or Industrial Bio-Based Technology); through suggesting and organizing technical symposia, or through helping the division incorporate additional electronic means of disseminating content to our members!

It is a great time to be a member of the Division! See you at the meeting!

-=-=-=--=

From the Councilor—Spiro D. Alexandratos, Councilor 2005- 2007

The Spring 2007 meeting brings to fruition two initiatives undertaken by the Executive Committee.  The IEC Division Fellow award program will be launched with two award symposia, one for Prof Rich Noble of the University of Colorado and one for Dr H.S. Muralidhara of the Cargill Corporation.  Nominations came entirely from you, the membership, and the two awardees are the first Division Fellows to be named.  There will be a new Call for Nominations to be sent to each of you by e-mail in April and the deadline will be May 15.  Please participate.  This is open to all members of the Division and is a new mechanism to recognize the outstanding work done by members of this Division in applied chemistry and engineering.  The award symposia that have been organized are outstanding.  Please attend the sessions and honor your colleagues.

In further showcasing this Division as THE division for applied chemistry and engineering, a multi-session symposium is scheduled for Chicago that is joint with AIChE.  Please check C&ENews for scheduling details and attend as many talks as your schedules allow.  The symposium organizers have gone to great lengths to ensure absolutely first rate sessions.

All of this is to say that the Division is taking the lead in recognizing the work done by its members and in organizing symposia that are in line with the interests its membership.  If this last sentence has led you to think "Well, you haven't organized a symposium in my area of work" - no

problem: contact the program chair, Michael Gonzalez.  Let him know what area we need to program in.  If you would like to organize the symposium, you will find it a painless process - Michael makes it far easier than you might think.  And if you don't want to organize the symposium, that's no problem as well: work with Michael to identify who else is doing work in the area you are proposing and the Program Committee will contact the possible organizers.

The bottom line is that this is an inclusive Division: we want you involved in all aspects of the Division. See you in Chicago (come for the chemistry but take a moment to stroll Michigan Avenue - it'll be worth the time).

Councilor’s Report to I&EC, Spring 2007

Melanie J. Lesko

For the last two years I have served as an associate member of the Meetings and Expositions (M&E) Committee. I now have a two year appointment as a full member of M&E. There are 6 subcommittees of M&E and I am appointed to two of those, expositions and finance. The other subcommittees are meeting site selection, regional meetings, technical programming and meeting logistics.

The expositions subcommittee considers how to make the expo better for the members and for the exhibitors and sets booth prices and times that it will be open during the national meetings. We also consider the floor layout and new features that pull more members in, e.g. the “town hall” area near the center of the exhibit floor where mini-seminars are held by exhibitors throughout the show.

The finance committee recommends meeting registration fee changes to the whole committee after consideration of the meeting costs and income. For example, the increased use of LCD projectors and now adding a laptop to every meeting room adds a cost to the meeting. The divisions wanted this change, but it meant an increase in meeting registration fees.

After the subcommittee meetings the whole M&E committee considers their recommendations and forwards those that pass along to the ACS Council. It also addresses any general items of business from the Board or Council, particularly those affecting meeting attendees and logistics. Quite often there are a number of items of business in M&E that directly impact I&EC programming functions, which I bring back to the executive and/or programming committees during the national meeting.

Prior to my service on M&E I was a member of the Divisional Activities Committee (DAC). I am very interested to see what will eventually come from DAC regarding the dues allocations to divisions. That process of change began while I was on DAC, but it is evolving slowly. I have also served on the Women Chemists Committee and Constitution and Bylaws. Thus I have quite a bit of experience in the ACS committees which I try to use to the benefit of I&EC. I would welcome any feedback, concerns or questions on this committee and its area of responsibility, or others of interest to you, via email at leskom@tamug.edu.

I&EC Division Supports Regional Meetings

The I&EC Division supported the Southeast Regional Meeting (SERMACS) held in Augusta GA November 1-4, 2006. A total of $1,000 (Silver level sponsorship) was provided to SERMACS based on a request from Tom Crute, who handled programming for SERMACS. These funds helped sponsor a 4-hour workshop for Industrial chemists entitled “Natural Gas Supply Management” that was offered through the Georgia Institute of Technology.  The I&EC Division welcomes requests from all regional ACS chapters; we hope to expand support of regional meetings soon.

Novel Chemistry with Industrial Applications (NCIA) Subdivision

Joseph R. Zoeller

Purpose of the Subdivision

The purpose of the subdivision is to provide a forum for the dissemination of novel and interdisciplinary chemistry directed toward industrial applications in traditional and non-traditional chemistry related industries.

While the subdivision shares the traditional role of the I&EC to publicize chemistry and engineering leading to cheaper, cleaner, and less energy intensive production method, the sub-division is unique in that it also seeks to promote the discussion of:

a)       Chemistry in industries not traditionally considered a purely chemical enterprise, such as electronics, transportation, security, communications, defense, etc..

b)       Chemistry imbedded in multidisciplinary research efforts and industries, such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, and electronics.

Chemistry in these arenas is rapidly evolving, but since they cross traditional disciplines and are often in non-traditional chemical industries, they often lack a good home elsewhere in ACS.

Organizational Announcements

As of November, we had 182 registered members in the subdivision. The subdivision is now large enough to transition from a provisional status to a fully operating sub-division. We have submitted by-laws for approval by the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Subdivision and should have them submitted to the membership in the next few months. This should be followed up by elections this summer for a chair elect.

In addition, to provide the requisite number of officers, Jerry Spivey (Chemical Engineering professor, Louisiana State University) has agreed to serve as the subdivision chair next year at which time elections will be held to select a chair elect. Joe Zoeller, the current sub-division chair will serve as past chair and will assume Jerry's role as programming chair.

Annual Meeting

We will be holding the subdivision Annual meeting at the Spring National meeting in Chicago, The date and location are Sunday, March 25, between 2-4PM in the Burnham Room of the Hyatt Regency in Chicago.

Symposia

At the Fall, 2006 national ACS meeting in San Francisco, the sub-division sponsored on:

1)       Process Intensification (organized by Yong Wang, Jamie Holladay, and Galip Akay and  co-sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers)

2)       In-Situ Spectroscopic Monitoring in Process Development and Production (Organized by Paul Barrett and Joe Zoeller and Co-sponsored by the Analytical Divison)

3)       Industrial Applications of Computational Chemical Structure Modeling (Organized by Anthony Cugini, David Sholl, and Hongmei Wen, Co-sponsored by Polymer Sciences and Materials Engineering)

I would like to thank each of the organizers for their efforts.

Unfortunately, the programming in 2007 does not look to be as ambitious as in 2006. As we develop programming for Fall 2007 and beyond, we have only one committed symposium, Chemicals from Alternative Resources (being organized by Jerry Spivey, LSU, and Joe Zoeller, Eastman Chemical Company) which is scheduled for the Spring 2008 National Meeting in New Orleans. Additional topics that are under consideration are symposia on Materials for a Green Living Space, Biodegradable Polymers, and a rescheduled Chemistry in the Electronics Industry. If you know, or can suggest, people with an interest in organizing symposia in these areas, or any evolving topic of interest to you that or one of your colleagues would like to see as part of the programming contact either Joe Zoeller (jzoeller@eastman.com) or Jerry Spivey (jjspivey@lsu.edu) with your ideas and we will see what we can do.

Invitation to Join the Novel Chemistry with Industrial Applications Sub-Division:

If you feel the Novel chemistry with Industrial Applications subdivision is a worthy endeavor on the part of the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division, we would like to hear form you and have you join the subdivision. There is no additional cost. Simply contact the sub-division chair, Joe Zoeller, by email at jzoeller@eastman.com, or if you prefer, by mail at Eastman Chemical Co., P.O. Box 1972, Kingsport, TN 37662-5150 or phone at 1-423-229-5684 to join the sub-division or to get additional information.

Joint ACS/AIChE Programming

235th - ACS National Meeting & Exposition

April 6-10, 2008, New Orleans, LA

The American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) will hold their respective spring meetings over the same dates in New Orleans in 2008—April 6-10. As a result, there are several opportunities for both individual and joint programming as described below.

ACS The ACS Technical Divisions1 will produce a technical program as they normally do for the bi-annual national meetings. All symposia will be entered through the ACS OASYS system and will be held at the Morial Convention Center and ACS hotels.

The overarching theme for the New Orleans meeting is Energy and the Environment, which is endorsed by President-Elect Bruce Bursten. The theme will serve as a forum for

joint ACS/AIChE sessions and related symposia. Themed symposia as well as Presidential symposia will be entered through the ACS OASYS system and will be held at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center and ACS hotels.

AIChE The AIChE National Programming Committee2 (NPC) groups will produce an enhanced AIChE Spring Meeting, with the intent to combine programming traditionally held at the AIChE Fall Meeting with the Spring Meeting. Symposia will be entered through the AIChE Confex system and will primarily be held at the New Orleans Hyatt, the AIChE headquarters hotel.

ACS/AIChE Joint-Society Thematic Programming. The AIChE/ACS Programming Work Group, cochaired by Kelvin Lee (AIChE, KHL9@cornell.edu) and Mike Morello (ACS, mike_morello@quakeroats.com) will develop a joint-society symposium – a showcase event – early in the week of the meeting. All symposia will be entered through the ACS OASYS system and will primarily be held at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center.

Cosponsored Symposia. The ACS Technical Division Program Chairs and the AIChE NPC Groups will coordinate with their counterparts within each Society to develop cosponsored symposia of interest to both groups with the goal of attracting attendees from both societies. All jointly cosponsored symposia should be entered into the ACS OASYS system, and will be held at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center or ACS hotels. The ACS Department of Division Advancement will send an email to all program chairs for Chicago and Boston, current division officers and councilors, and other interested groups to inform them of the co-located meeting and the opportunity to program cooperatively between the two societies. The ACS Program Chairs are encouraged to contact their counterparts in the AIChE NPC Groups, AIChE divisions and forums2 to discuss coprogramming opportunities.

Meeting Registrations

ACS and AIChE registrations will be through each society's separate registration systems. AIChE Spring Meetings normally have fewer attendees than ACS Spring Meetings (~1,500 vs. ~11,000). As an incentive, AIChE is offering its members the opportunity to register for both the Spring and Fall meetings at a combined (reduced) rate. Registrants in either society will be able to attend all technical sessions of either society and the ACS Expo. This creates the opportunity for ACS divisions and the AIChE NPC groups to create joint or stand-alone programming that is attractive to both society members.

Meeting Publications

ACS uses the OASYS system as the primary source for publication of the ACS National Meetings in print, CD-ROM (abstracts), and on the Web. Any joint programming or symposia that ACS wants to include in its publications should therefore be entered from the beginning into the ACS OASYS system. This approach will help to manage the meeting room assignments by the ACS logistics team.

1The ACS National Meeting programs are developed by the ACS Technical Divisions. Contact information for the current ACS Program Committee Chairs can be found on the OASYS submission pages for Chicago (http://oasys.acs.org/acs/233nm/oasys.htm) and Boston

2The AIChE National Meeting programs are developed by the AIChE National Program Committees (NPC). Contact information for the NPC groups can be found at:

http://www.aiche.org/Conferences/Resources/NPCmembers.aspx. AIChE also has divisions and forums, which can be found at: http://www.aiche.org/DivisionsForums/ViewAll/index.aspx.
