Assuring Water Quality in Eastern North
Carolina
T he Eastern North Carolina Section of
the American Chemical Society has received a small grant to
address water quality issues in Eastern North Carolina.
Besides air, water is the most important element necessary to
sustain life. This requires that we not pollute our water
supplies by unwisely disposing of materials that would find
their way into water. Furthermore, water, being a universal
solvent, tends to extract various components from any material
that remains in contact with it for a period of time.
Therefore, the population at large needs to be educated to
increase awareness, and all of us should be involved in
minimizing pollution of our water supplies. Eastern North
Carolina (ENC) has extensive coastline that can be affected by
a number of pollution sources. Also, the state has an
abundance of golf courses, hog farms, and other potential
sources of water pollution. By assuring that we not pollute
our streams, aquifers, wells, ponds, lakes, and the ocean, we
can achieve our goals of maintaining and/or improving water
quality. To encourage involvement of the general population,
the local section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) would
work with various non-profit local groups. If you group would
like to offer your help in tackling water quality issues,
please contact Dr. Sut Ahuja, Councilor, ENC
