Biography:
Dr. Robert Giegengack is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth and Environmental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. in Geology from Yale, his M.S. in Geology from the University of Colorado, and his Ph.D. in Geology from Yale. He arrived at Penn in 1968 and founded an environmental studies major in 1972. For four decades, he has been one of Penn's most popular and recognized teachers, a leader in the development of academically-based, community-service courses. He has twice served as Chairman of the Geology Department. He also served as a Co-Director at the Institute for Environmental Studies. Professor Giegengack has received numerous teaching awards, including the SAS Dean’s Award for Innovation in Teaching in 2003. He was a co-recipient of the W.T. Grant Inaugural Award for Youth Development in 2003.
Giegengack studies geologic archives that enable paleoclimatologists to reconstruct the history of climate change during the very long period of time (~4.5 billion years) that preceded the instrumental meteorological record. This work provides a long-term scientific perspective on environmental processes, including the issues of global warming. Giegengack's field work has taken him to every continent except Australia. Giegengack contends that natural warming periods in our planet’s past have triggered the release of CO2 into the atmosphere from ocean- and land-based reservoirs, and that the most significant consequence of human fossil-fuel consumption is that we have altered that balance by pouring CO2 into the atmosphere and those terrestrial reservoirs simultaneously

This year the American Chemical Society celebrates the 21st Anniversary of the National Chemistry Week program! As part of the National Chemistry Week celebration (October 19 – 25, 2008), the Delaware Section of the American Chemical Society is sponsoring a “Family Science Adventure” Open House. This year’s theme is “Having a Ball with Chemistry.” Our Open House day will include chemistry competitions for all grade levels with CASH PRIZES, hands-on exhibits, refreshments, games, and a chemistry magic show.
This will be a great opportunity to celebrating the Summer Olympics and explore many ways that SPORTING EQUIPMENT, ATHELETES and FANS benefits from Chemistry.
We are in the process of developing ideas, testing possible activities, and pursuing potential industrial partnerships. If you have ideas or would like to VOLUNTEER with the National Chemistry Week 2008 Committee, please contact Narmada Gunawardena at Narmada.Gunawardena@AstraZeneca.com.
NATIONAL POSTER CONTEST:
Students are invited to create a poster that celebrates the theme “Having a Ball with Chemistry.” The poster should be fun, motivational, and focused on chemistry and sports. Students in grades K-12 are invited to participate. Please see the separate poster contest announcement in the Del-Chem Bulletin.
Looking forward to seeing you during National Chemistry Week!
