CVS-ACS Student Symposium and Awards Banquet
April 23rd, 2005, Mount Holyoke College

The annual Undergraduate Student Research Symposium will be held at Mount Holyoke College in their Chemistry Complex, on Saturday, April 23rd, 2005.* Students will present talks and posters on their research from 9 am to noon. We encourage all undergraduate research students at colleges and universities in the Section to participate. In addition to checking out exciting research being performed throughout the Section, this event is an excellent opportunity for ACS Student Affiliate Groups to network and learn about the activities of neighboring groups. Finally, we ask all Section members be they in academia, industry, or government employment—to come to the morning sessions at Mount Holyoke College and discover the exciting research undertaken by our undergraduates in our Section.

The annual Awards Banquet will immediately follow the morning symposium. Not only will the $1000 Anna Harrison Award for best presentation by a woman at the morning symposium be awarded; but we will also recognize graduating college seniors chosen by their chemistry and chemical engineering departments to receive the ACS Award for top achievement at their institutions. Also, we will recognize high school students chosen to take the National Olympiad Exam based on their high scores in the ACS/CVS Olympiad. Finally, we will honor 50-year ACS members in the CVS section. All members are welcome to attend the Banquet (cost $12.00).

Last Announcement: Award Committee Seeks Nominees for the 2005 John S. Burlew Connecticut Valley Section Award Highlighting Outstanding Contribution to Chemistry

The CVS award committee solicits nominations for the John S. Burlew Connecticut Valley Section Award to recognize an outstanding contribution(s) to chemistry.  All members of the CVS are eligible. A nominee must have made an outstanding contribution to chemistry.  The nominee must be a member of CVS and must not have received an award from ACS or other technical or scientific organizations for the same contribution(s). In addition to a plaque, the recipient of this award receives $1000.

Please make a nomination consisting of a short letter describing the nominee's qualifications, a chemistry vitae, and names and addresses of two references familiar with the nominee's cited contribution.  Self-nominations are encouraged.  A request for further information regarding suitable nominees will be made, if necessary, to help the Committee in the final selection process.  Nominations should be sent by May 1, 2005 to the current chair of the Burlew Award Committee: Dr. Guy Crundwell, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, CT, 06050.

Central Connecticut State University to Hold Workshop on Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction Methods, May 24th-26th, 2005

During the summer of 2004, CCSU was awarded an NSF-MRI grant to purchase a single crystal diffractometer with a CCD detector. The diffractometer will have both Mo and Cu X-ray sources and will be capable of data collection at low temperature as well as on powders and fiber samples. The instrument will be used for research, teaching, and outreach in the Departments of Chemistry, Physics & Earth Science, and Engineering Technology. Members of the CVS are encouraged to contact the director of the Molecular Structure Center (MSC@CCSU) (Dr. Guy Crundwell) to discuss possible collaborations.

Additionally, CCSU plans on holding a 3-day workshop on chemical crystallography from May 24th to May 26th at CCSU. The workshop will include crystal data selection and mounting, crystal indexing, data collection and integration, and structure solution and refinement. A special segment on modeling twinning and disorder is also scheduled. There are slots available for ten participants. Ideally, all participants will be able to refine X-ray data collected on samples of their choice. A modest fee covering supplies and refreshments will be considered. For more information on the facility or workshop, please contact Dr. Guy Crundwell (crundwellg@ccsu.edu), Associate Professor of Chemistry, Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, CT, 06050.
