The Nora Harrington Lecture scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at Elms College has been cancelled. The speaker has withdrawn due to personal reasons.
As an honor to Sr. Nora and in lieu of the lecture this year, we are donating in her name a new edition of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics to the Elms College Alumnae Library. We look forward to the 21st Nora Harrington Lecture to be held next year, 2004.

Dr. Thomas Zajicek to Present the 21st Annual Nora Harrington Lecture at Elms
College

The 21st annual Nora Harrington Lecture will be held at Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumnae Library Theatre. The speaker is Dr. Thomas Zajicek, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts. The title of his lecture is
"I Didn’t Lose My Equilibrium"
Perhaps you’ve heard the saying, “Old chemists never die, they just reach equilibrium.” Dr. Zajicek will show us, paradoxically, that we can keep our equilibrium without actually reaching it. In his lecture, he will present anecdotes of the applications of freshman chemistry (e.g. equilibrium) to real life problems.
Dr. Zajicek received a B.S. in 1950 from Baldwin-Wallace College, an M.S. in 1958 and Ph.D. in 1961 from Wayne State University. He has taught chemistry for over 40 years. He has carried out important research studies on the inorganic chemistry occurring in natural aquatic environments as well as aspects of trace metal chemistry in nutrition and abnormalities associated with metabolic dysfunctions.
The Nora Harrington Lecture series is jointly sponsored by the Connecticut Valley section of the American Chemical Society and the Elms College Chemistry Department. The lecture series was inaugurated in 1983 to honor the 32 years of teaching service of Sr. Nora Harrington to Elms College. A Social Hour, featuring wine and hors d'oeuvres is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Fontbonne Room of Mary Dooley College Center. The Social Hour is free to CVS members and invited guests. A reception will immediately follow the lecture.
