MINUTES EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING SEPTEMBER 16, 2002 The meeting of the
CVS/ACS Executive Board was called to order by Chair-Elect Mr. Everett Turner
at 7:50 P.M. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA. MEMBERS

MAY 13, 2002. MOTION MADE AND SECONDED to accept the minutes. MOTION
PASSED. II. FINANCIAL
REPORT. The financial report
for the period January 1 B September 16, 2002 was
distributed by Dr. Dimock. He
mentioned that local sections dues receipts are ahead of last year. MOTION MADE AND SECONDED to accept the report. MOTION
PASSED. III. ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMUNICATIONS. Mr. Michael
Pollastri has resigned as VALCHEMIST Business Manager. Mr. Steve Lantos,
chemistry teacher at Brookline High School (MA) sent a letter of thanks
to the section for its
contribution to the High School Day Program at the recent national ACS
meeting in Boston, MA. The deadline for
the next VALCHEMIST issue is November 15th. Anticipated deadline for the winter
issue is February 15, 2003. Ms.
Douville, Editor, requests material for filling the issues. A jointly
sponsored dinner meeting with the Chemistry Department at The University of
Connecticut will be held on the evening of October 9th at Storrs,
CT beginning at 6:00 P.M. and will feature Dr. Arthur Ellis of the NSF as the
evening=speaker. Future meetings are in the planning stages. IV.
COMMITTEE REPORTS. COUNCILORS= REPORT OF THE BOSTON ACS
MEETING Drs. Archer,
Kozlowski, Smist, Torre, and alternate councilor Dr. Wikholm. Divisions have requested larger
allotments. A joint committee
was established to review the
request and report back to the Council at the next national meeting at New
Orleans. Income for ACS
operating expenses is down this year.
CE&N advertising is down this year. Chem Abstracts receipts are holding up very well. The 7th edition of Safety in Academic Chemistry Labs has
been published in two parts. The
employment-clearing house was very busy with more activity occurring on-line. There were more applicants than
positions available. Employment
clearinghouse services have been expanded. There were 17,000 registrations. The new on time registration fee will be $275.00. Future slide presenters will now have
to request projectors ahead of time for their presentations. NATIONAL
CHEMISTRY WEEK Dr.
Anderson. Mr. Fitzgerald
reports that CVS will repeat again this year its very successful public
outreach program on October 19th at the Westfield Shopping Mall in Enfield, CT from 11 A.
M. to 2 P.M. The week of
national celebrations will begin on October 20th. Its theme this year will be national
mole days. Several materials will be mailed to high
school chemistry teachers in the CVS region. Materials are available for distribution to
libraries. EDUCATION B Mr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Craine.
The U. S. Chemistry Olympiad report was issued by ACS and the section
received one copy. It was passed
around to the Board members. It
was noted that CVS is one of only a few local sections, which has run the
annual chemistry Olympiad continuously from the time the program was initiated
by ACS. NERM B Dr. Smist. The NERM steering committee has been
reconstituted. NERM 2003
will be held in Saratoga, NY; NERM 2004 will be held in Rochester, NY, and
NERM 2005 will be held in Bridgeport, CT; and NERM 2006 may be held in Syracuse,
NY. On the whole regional
meetings are doing well. The next meeting
of the Board will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at Trinity College,
CT at 7:45 P.M. The meeting was adjourned at
