IV. COMMITTEE REPORTS.

COUNCILORS= REPORT  OF THE BOSTON ACS MEETING

Drs. Archer, Kozlowski, Smist, Torre, and alternate councilor Dr. Wikholm.  Divisions have requested larger allotments.  A joint committee was established  to review the request and report back to the Council at the next national meeting at New Orleans.  Income for ACS operating expenses is down this year.  CE&N advertising is down this year.  Chem Abstracts receipts are holding up very well.  The 7th edition of  Safety in Academic Chemistry Labs has been published in two parts.  The employment-clearing house was very busy with more activity occurring on-line.  There were more applicants than positions available.  Employment clearinghouse services have been expanded.  There were 17,000 registrations.  The new on time registration fee will be $275.00.  Future slide presenters will now have to request projectors ahead of time for their presentations.

NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK

Dr. Anderson.   Mr. Fitzgerald reports that CVS will repeat again this year its very successful public outreach program on October 19th  at the Westfield Shopping Mall in Enfield, CT from 11 A. M. to 2 P.M.  The week of national celebrations will begin on October 20th.  Its theme this year will be national mole days.  Several  materials will be mailed to high school chemistry teachers in the CVS region.  Materials are available for distribution to libraries.

EDUCATION B Mr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Craine.  The U. S. Chemistry Olympiad report was issued by ACS and the section received one copy.  It was passed around to the Board members.  It was noted that CVS is one of only a few local sections, which has run the annual chemistry Olympiad continuously from the time the program was initiated by ACS.

NERM B Dr. Smist. The NERM steering committee has been reconstituted.   NERM 2003 will be held in Saratoga, NY; NERM 2004 will be held in Rochester, NY, and NERM 2005 will be held in Bridgeport, CT; and NERM 2006 may be held in Syracuse, NY.  On the whole regional meetings are doing well.

The next meeting of the Board will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at Trinity College, CT  at 7:45 P.M.   The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
