WOMEN CHEMISTS COMMITTEE (ACS).   The Committee is seeking nominations for their recognition award.  Nominations are due on Feb. 1, 2005 and all nominations remain on a candidate list for three years.

V.   OFFICERS AND CHAIR  REPORTS.

Undergraduate Research Symposium –  Ms. Knox.  No progress was reported.  A meeting of the ad hoc committee (J. Knox, G. Crundwell, J. Sanborn, and T. Mitzel) to examine the issues and problems with the annual event will be scheduled in late December (after the Budget Committee Meeting).

Electronic Communications – Dr. Sanborn.  He asked the editor of the VALCHEMIST to place an item in the next issue requesting section members to email Dr. Sanborn if they wish to be notified of section business via electronic mailings.   His purpose would be to build a list. This initiative would ultimately reduce the section cost for member communication.  Requests for member email addresses from the national ACS office has met with concerns for member confidentiality.  Further discussion will take place at the January 2005 meeting.

SEED PROGRAM – Dr, Sanborn.  He asked the Board if the Section wanted to participate in the program.  Several members of the Board spoke about their experiences (good and bad) with the program in the past.  In addition, the Section in the past has assisted the program financially.  The Chair will investigate what other sections of comparable size to CVS is budgeting for their SEED program.  A deadline of February 1, 2005 has been set for applications.  It was suggested that the program be publicized in the next issue of the VALCHEMIST.

SECTION MEETINGS – Ms. Knox.  A section dinner meeting is planned for February 10, 2005.  The after dinner talk given by an ACS tour speaker and the topic will deal with coffee roasting.  A fall meeting is planned for October 10, 2005, with an ACS tour speaker who will talk about how art changes with time.

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE REPORT – Ms. Knox.  She reported on her recent attendance at the conference.  Some of the issues that the ACS are keenly interested in are membership, younger member participation, greater collaboration with other organizations, joint award meetings, and encouraging innovative programs

NERM – Dr. Smist.  NERM 2004 reported 400 papers submitted with an anticipated 700 registrants.  It is expected that financially the NERM should end in the black.  The books were closed on NERM 2003 and made approximately $2,000.  Under the new rules 40% of the this amount goes back to the NERM steering committee and 60% goes to the host section. The steering committee gave an advance of  $1,000 to the host section of NERM 2004.  NERM now has to fund the high school teaching award.   NERM 2005 is being hosted by the Western Connecticut  Section at Sacred Heart University in Bridgeport CT in July 13 – 17, 2005.  Assistance is being sought from all the sections contiguous to the section.  Help in organizing symposia for the conference is being sought.  Looking ahead, NERM 2006 will be held in Binghamton, NY.  There will be no NERM in 2007.  NERM 2008 will be hosted by the Northeast Section at the University of New Hampshire.  The NERM By Laws have been returned from the lawyer and the anticipated date of incorporation is July 17, 2005

● NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK - Mr. Turner & Dr. Anderson.  A CVS mall activity in celebration of NCW was held in Amherst, MA.  About 50 – 75 people visited the display.  It was reported that the mall gave no prior advertising of the event.  Also, 2500 copies of CHEM MATTERS were distributed to 56 requesters.

.

SECTION AWARDS - Dr, Crundwell.  No nominations were received for the Burlew Award.  Another announcement will be placed in the next issue of the VALCHEMIST.  The High School Teachers Award Committee has been dormant.  The committee was reconstituted with Dr. Gorski, Mr. Ferrier, and a high school chemistry teacher (preferably a past award winner).

The next meeting of the Board will be held on Tuesday evening, January 18, 2005,  at The University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT beginning at 7:45 P.M.  The meeting adjourned at 9:30 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
