Patent Infringement and Product Liability Litigation Involving Chemicals and Plastics

Dr. Myer Ezrin:  Director, Associates Program, Institute of Materials Science

University of Connecticut

Millions and even billions of dollars can be involved in litigation for patent infringement or product liability.  Cases will be presented in which the speaker participated as an expert witness.  In a patent infringement case, the decisive development that led to the court deciding in favor of the plaintiff was an innovative analytical method.  Other cases of product liability will be discussed including one involving a major failure of a plastic company in a large-scale application that has affected the acceptance of plastic in general.  Cases of death or serious personal injury due to plastics failure will also be presented.

Myer Ezrin received the PhD in organic chemistry at Yale.  Prior to joining the Institute of Materials Sciences at the University of Connecticut, he had worked at DuPont, Monsanto, and Springborn Laboratories.  At UConn, he directs the IMS Associates Program, an industrial outreach program, and does research on plastics analysis, plastics failure analysis, and electrical insulation.
