Obituary William Edwin McEwen, 80, of 5 Bedford Court, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Professor Emeritus, died May 24 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Born Jan. 13, 1922 in Oaxaca, Mexico, and raised in Yonkers, NY, he was the son of Annabel Miller of St. Johns, Newfoundland, and William Edwin McEwen of Tennessee. He received his graduate education at Columbia University (BA, 1944; MA, 1945; PhD, 1947). He served as Technical Engineer, Union Carbide Corporation, Oak Ridge, TN, 1945‑1946, on detached service, US Army. Dr. McEwen was Professor of Chemistry at the University of Kansas from 1947‑1962. He joined the Chemistry Department at the University of Massachusetts as Head in 1962 and was appointed Commonwealth Professor in 1977. His leadership was vital to the growth and development of the Chemistry Department during three decades. He retired in 1990 but continued to serve as Director of The International Council on Main Group Chemistry and as editor, Heteroatom Chemistry, both of which he created. He received numerous honors and awards including the Chancellor=s Distinguished Faculty Medal in 1986 and the Outstanding Civilian Service Award, US Department of the Army, 1984. He was a member of the American Chemical Society since 1946 and served on numerous local and National Committees. He was Connecticut Valley Councillor, 1967‑85; member, Board of Directors, Region I, 1986‑88; member, Society Committee on Publications, 1986‑88; and was on the Editorial Board of Journal of Organic Chemistry, 1966‑70. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was elected Fellow, New York Academy of Sciences. He was author and coauthor of six books and 160 technical articles, was preceptor of 110 PhD students, and directed the research of about 50 MS students. He taught undergraduate organic chemistry to about 17,000 students. He leaves his wife of 20 years, Cathryn Gudmundsen McEwen and former wife Miriam McEwen; three children: Alfred McEwen, Tucson, AZ; Joan McEwen, Little Rock, AR; and Robert McEwen, Amherst; and four grandchildren. |
