EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
NOVEMBER 20, 2002
The
meeting of the CVS/ACS Executive Board was called to order by Chair-Elect Mr. Everett Turner at 7:50 P.M.
at Trinity College, Hartford, CT

I.
MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2002.
MOTION MADE AND SECONDED to accept the
minutes. MOTION PASSED.
II.
FINANCIAL REPORT.
The
financial report for the period January 1 -
November 20, 2002 (see enclosure) was distributed by Dr. Wikholm on
behalf of treasurer.

III. ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMUNICATIONS.
Announcement from ACS about tour speaker
availability in 2003 for the Northeast Region.
Dr. Anthony Noce of the Albany Section was
elected to head NERM.
Ms. Colleen Bjorekk, a high school chemistry
teacher at RHAM High School in Hebron, CT was selected to the receive the 2002
Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher Award from the CVS. Dr. Smist,
Publicity Committee Chair for MA, will submit a press release for local and ACS
publication.
BURLEW SECTION AWARD. There will be no award made this year.
IV.
COMMITTEE REPORTS.
BUDGET
COMMITTEE - The committee will meet in December and before Christmas to
construct the 2003 budget for submission to and approval by the Board at its
January meeting.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE - Dr. Sanborn. The committee will meet on the same day and
at the same venue as the Budget Committee.
It will convene immediately after the Budget Committee adjourns. The committee will report a tentative
schedule of section programs for 2003.
EDUCATION
- Mr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Craine. The
CVS Chemistry Olympiad for 2003 is in the planning stage. The event will be held for CT schools at The
University of Connecticut on March 20th and for MA schools at the University of
Massachusetts on March 18th.
NCW
- Dr. Anderson. Letters were sent to all the high schools in
the section announcing the week. There
were forty requests and 1500 + "Chem Matters" and 450
"Celebrating Chemistry" were distributed. Much of the materials were aimed at 4th - 6th grade middle school students. There are a lot of NCW materials left over and available for
distribution for
the
asking. Mr. Fitzgerald reported on the
very successful CVS sponsored four-hour celebration of Chemistry Week at the
Enfield Mall. The 2003 celebration will
take place on October 19 - 25. The
theme will be "Earth's Atmosphere and Beyond."
NOMINATIONS
AND ELECTIONS - Dr. Craft. Ballots are
still being received with a deadline for receipt of ballots set for December
23, 2002.
WEBSITE. The Board had several questions about the
Website. There were server problems
recently. Drs. Smist and Torre agreed
to ask the Webmaster to attend the January Board meeting.
STUDENT AWARDS LUNCHEON AND UNDERGRADUATE
RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM VENUE . Traditionally both the April events have
been held consecutively on the same day and location. Dr. Anderson agreed to locate a place and date for the two
meetings. She will report to the Board
in January.
The
next meeting of the Board will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at Springfield College, Springfield, MA
7:45 P.M. The meeting was adjourned at
9:15 P.M.
