SAMs are now being widely developed in a range of applied areas. One is biotechnology, in which the ability to control the interface between synthetic materials and biological systems (solutions of proteins; cells) is invaluable. This talk will discuss some of these applications of SAMs,and the very interesting problems in fundamental surface science on which they rest.
