| A new approach to nanoengineering of electrocatalysts by depositing monolayer of Pt on metal single crystal and nanoparticle surfaces, which employs a redox replacement of a Cu adlayer by a Pt monolayer, has been explored for O2 reduction reaction. The kinetics of O2 reduction has been determined on a Pt or a Pt0.75Pd0.25 monolayers deposited on Au(111) and Pd(111) or on Au and Pd nanoparticles. Gold is a poor electrocatalyst for O2 reduction and the rational behind its selection as a support for Pt is its stability and a possibility to affect the electronic properties of Pt in the right direction. A Pt0.75Pd0.25 monolayer on Au/C was found to be a very active electrocatalyst for O2 reduction. Its activity is equal to the activity of the Pt/C catalyst with a 2.5 larger Pt loading. The activity of a Pt monolayer on Au(111) is also considerable, as well as that of Pt/Pd surfaces. |
