This presentation will describe the synthesis of RGD- and PEG-terminated thiols having the formulas HS(CH2)11(OCH2CH2)6OCH2COGRGD and HS(CH2)11(OCH2CH2)6OH, respectively. The use of these thiols for generating single-component and mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold will be reported. Characterization of the SAMs by ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) will be detailed. Specific studies will focus on the use of these SAMs in conjunction with microcontact printing to prepare biologically active patterned substrates. Preliminary studies of endothelial cell adhesion will be described.
