| A series of focally functionalized carbosilane dendrons containing up to 81 SiCl3 groups have been designed and synthesized. We demonstrated that very flat (rms roughness: 0.11-0.35 nm over 5x5 square micron) and robust monolayers derived from these dendrons could be prepared on mica and silicon surfaces by spin coating or self-assembly in solution. The monolayer and multilayer films were characterized by a range of surface analytical tools and chemical derivatization. The results agree with the proposed film structures where the dendron molecules flatten on the surfaces to maximize the interaction between the silanol periphery and the polar substrate surfaces. This study provides new insights of the process of self-assembly growth of alkylsiloxane monolayers, and the results support our hypothesis that focally-functionalized dendrons with a surface-active periphery could serve as a new platform for combining the top-down and bottom-up approaches to controlling the locations of individual functional molecules at surfaces. |
