| A new experimental technique has been developed to measure the solubility of gasses and vapors in polymers or other sorbents at elevated pressures. This simple technique involves measuring the total weight of a pressurized vessel containing a sorbent material pressurized with a vapor, assessing the amount of vapor in the headspace of the vessel, and evaluating the total amount of vapor within the ab/adsorbed phase based on the difference. Sorption data obtained using this technique for carbon dioxide in poly(vinyl acetate), propylene in poly(propylene), and nitrogen in poly(vinyl butyrol) are found to agree well with data acquired by established techniques. The Panayiotou-Vera equation of state or Henry’s Law is applied where appropriate to correlate the solubility data. Adsorption isotherms for carbon dioxide and nitrogen on a Calgon PSC Carbon, measured with the static sorption technique, are quantitatively compared to data taken with a standard volumetric technique. |
