CHAS Awards Criteria

College and University Health and Safety Award Criteria

Nomination and/or verification may be made by a local ACS section or nearby industry which has on its staff an ACS member with expertise in laboratory safety. There are ten categories for judging. Submitted nomination materials for each should include, and comment on each:

1.      Institutional safety policy.

2.      Chemical hygiene plans for instructional laboratories;

3.      Evidence of incorporation of safety concepts and sources of information into the curriculum:

a)      student rules

b)      examinations safety course offerings

c)      seminars on safety topics

d)      results of safety research

e)      others

4.      Chemical waste guidelines, documents and statistics.

5.      Storage: written policies and description of procedures.

6.      Prep room: chemical hygiene plan, general policy and procedures.

7.      Waste minimization: policy, practice, incorporation into curriculum.

8.      Faculty development: seminars, workshops, production of videotapes, slides, etc.

9.      Laboratories and chemical use areas: conditions:

a)      ventilation

b)      housekeeping

c)      supervision

d)      security

e)      emergency equipment

f)        personal protective equipment

10.  Accident reports: maintenance, analysis, use.


Tillmanns-Skolnick Award Criteria

  • Must be a member of the Division of Chemical Health and Safety and of ACS.
  • Must have been an active member of the Division for at least five years.  Activity id indicated by participation in, or moderation of, technical sessions in CHAS at national meetings, repeated contributions to CHAS publications, holding offices in the division, chairing division committees, etc.
  • Has shown support for the goals and activities of CHAS, and has through personal effort, helped CHAS reach those goals.

Howard Fawcett Chemical Health and Safety Award Criteria

The award is to be granted for outstanding contributions in the field of chemical health and safety without regard to age, nationality, race, gender or race.

Each nomination must be accompanied by a letter, no more than five pages long, that;

1.      Details the nominee's accomplishments,

2.      Identifies the work to be recognized,

3.      Gives a biographical sketch of the nominee, and

4.      Lists publications by the nominee.

Reprints of not more than five publications may be included. Books or tapes should not be included in the nomination package; abstracts or published reviews may be used in their place, or in place of extensive publications.

Six copies of all items used for nominations should be sent by February 15 of each year to the Awards Committee Chair to be certain that the award can be announced at the Spring Executive Committee meeting and plans can be made for the Fall Meeting Awards Symposium.


Fellows Awards Criteria:
Function: To recognize CHAS members in good standing who have provided continuous service.

Categories:

There are two categories:
    1.      Length of membership
    2.      Service

Award: The award consists of a certificate and a rosette.

Criteria
There are two categories for the award.  Submitted materials for each should include evidence of:

i. Membership in CHAS for fifteen years, or,
ii. For CHAS members with less than fifteen years of continuous membership and more than seven years of continuous membership and who have been active in CHAS activities for at least three years.


Service Awards Criteria:
Function:    To recognize services by individuals to the Division of Chemical Health and Safety.

Award: An ACS Past Chair's pin and an appropriate plaque of appreciation to be presented at a Divisional function during the year following the Chair's term.

Award: An appropriate plaque of appreciation to be presented to the past Divisional secretary and treasurer at a Divisional function during the Year following the term of office.

 


Special Awards Criteria:
An appropriate plaque or certificate for appreciation to be presented to any individual for exceptional services if deemed merited by the Awards Committee. This is not expected to be an annual award.

Transmit all of the materials supporting a nomination to the awards committee chair.


Student Registration Fee Payment
The ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety (CHAS) is pleased to announce a new program to encourage student participation in the CHAS Technical Program at ACS National Meetings.

For any individual who qualifies for the Student registration fee (undergraduate or graduate students, pre-college teachers), which is currently $25, CHAS will pay the registration fee if the student presents either a poster or an oral paper as part of the CHAS Technical Program.  For co-sponsored or co-listed symposia, CHAS must be the primary sponsor for this offer to apply.

The initial offering of this program applies to the San Francisco, and Washington meetings.  If registration information is known before guest registrations are due, CHAS can pay the registration fee directly; otherwise the fee can be reimbursed after the meeting upon submission of the registration receipt.
