Message from the Chair

Welcome to the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Health and Safety (CHAS) website. CHAS provides expertise in laboratory safety and chemical management and safe chemical work practices to the Society and the general public. To accomplish this mission, the Division:

maintains an online listserv for CHAS members to promote discussion and information sharing.

Check out the "News and Upcoming Events" section to see the Division's activities. The 2007 CHAS Annual Report is also available to review (in PDF format).

If you are just learning about CHAS, please review our membership benefits and information about the Journal of Chemical Health & Safety.

Salt Lake Call for Papers

A symposium on the Health and Safety Concerns of Polymeric Nanomaterials will be held at the American Chemical Society National Meeting, March 22-26, 2009 in Salt Lake City This symposium is being presented by the Division of Chemical Health and Safety and the Division of Polymer Chemistry

Tentative Program:

• Current topics in Nano-ESH
• Toxicology of polymeric nanomaterials
• Synthesis of polymers for metrology needs
• Instruments and techniques for hazards evaluation

Contributed oral and poster papers are welcome. The submission of a title to either one of the Symposium Organizers noted below or directly through the ACS website (www.acs.org/meetings) is requested by October 1, 2008 with the abstracts completed by October 22, 2008. Chemical Hoods in the 21st Century WebCast

On September 24, the Division had a successful webcast on "Chemical Hoods in the 21st Century. You can find links to information about this webcast, including the introductory podcast, here.

Philadelphia Meeting Activities

A slide show of pictures from the Division's social gathering at the Philadelphia national meeting, featuring the 2008 divisional award winners, is now available on line. Thanks to Neal Langerman for his efforts in producing this.

CHAS Logo Wear Available As of June, 2008, CHAS members can purchase clothing from Land's End on line store with the new divisional logo embroidered on it at http://ces.landsend.com/chas

CHAS Workshops Schedule

CHAS will be offering a variety of workshops are regional meetings this summer. The schedule for these Workshops is now available on our registration page. Abstracts of these are available here.

Think Safety Bracelets Now Available The ACS Committee on Chemical Safety has developed a "Think Safety" bracelet which is now available from the ACS on line web store. Packages of 10 are $12.50.
