Ms Anita Lotti from Westborough High School put her students to work creating posters for the 2006 National Chemistry Week poster contest. The theme was "Your Home-It's All Built on Chemistry" and students were asked to create posters that emphasized the role of chemistry in the home or demonstrated improvements in home safety.
Ms Lotti's classes created more than eighty posters that dealt with chemistry in the household. Ms Lotti narrowed down the selection to the best posters and submitted those posters to our National Chemistry Week Coordinator, Christopher Masi. With the help of Patrick Romano and Frank Giuliano, professors of chemistry and chemistry education at Westfield State College, a winning poster was chosen to represent CM-ACS.

Austin Scaplen's poster featuring lead paint remediation.
Although Austin's message about the dangers of lead-based paint and the simple measures that can be used to deal with lead paint provided a positive message about the role of chemistry in our homes, the judges at the 233rd ACS National Convention decided to go in a different direction. The judges at the national meeting chose posters created by students from the Blue Ridge and New Haven local sections. Nevertheless, we are thankful that Ms Lotti and her students participated in this contest and represented us well.
