Laboratory Waste Management: A Guidebook

The American Chemical Society Task Force on Laboratory Waste Management has developed this guidebook to assist laboratory managers and workers in attaining the safest possible laboratory environment while minimizing dangers to the environment.  This information may be helpful to all laboratories using chemicals including those in chemistry and biochemistry, the medical and biological sciences, engineering and technology, and even those in the non-science areas (such as fine arts) where chemicals are used for activities such as metal etching and photographic development.

This book begins in Chapters 2 and 3 with a discussion of the regulatory framework applicable to laboratory operations, then reviews approaches to training those who work in the lab.  Chapter 4 looks at the special responsibilities of administrators in promoting and ensuring safe work practices.   Chapter 5 on identification of wastes provides a summary of methods allowing laboratory workers and management personnel to properly characterize wastes for management and disposal.  Chapter 6 addresses the important concepts of waste prevention and minimization while Chapters 7 and 8 review on and off-site waste management.  Finally, Chapter 9 provides advice on effectively working with regulatory personnel.
